{"id":77130,"date":"2023-10-08T04:00:59","date_gmt":"2023-10-07T17:00:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=77130"},"modified":"2023-10-08T04:00:59","modified_gmt":"2023-10-07T17:00:59","slug":"torquay-aflw-star-helps-to-inspire-next-gen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/torquay-aflw-star-helps-to-inspire-next-gen\/","title":{"rendered":"Torquay AFLW star helps to inspire next gen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A TORQUAY local and former AFLW captain has inspired the next generation of female football athletes by gifting her boots to embody the spirit of women&#8217;s sporting progress.<\/p>\n<p>Foundation AFLW player Katie Loynes joined fellow trailblazers of the sport in a partnership with Johnnie Walker to help create five individually handcrafted football boots to work towards providing a platform for female voices of the game.<\/p>\n<p>Crafted from boots worn by Katie and 20 other legacy players in the league&#8217;s history, the new boots were gifted to current athletes in the league, to symbolise the bold steps which have been and continue to be taken from one generation to the next.<\/p>\n<p>The bespoke footwear was crafted in collaboration with Melbourne-based designer, Matea Glu\u0161\u010devi\u0107, by repurposing laces, leather and studs.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_118404\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-118404\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-118404 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/10\/EmilyBatesbespokeboo_63808.jpg?_t=1696384715\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-118404\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The five pairs of boots were crafted from boots worn by Katie Loynes and 20 other legacy AFLW players.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Katie Loynes made her AFLW debut in 2017, in the inaugural match at Ikon Park for the Carlton Blues.<\/p>\n<p>During her incredible career, she was crowned best and fairest in the 2018 season, then named captain of the club before retiring after 45 games.<\/p>\n<p>Loynes, who ended up donating the tongue of her last match worn pair of boots, said she was thrilled to be recognised as a trailblazer of the sport.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s all about championing strides forward in womens sport.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These boots have now been passed on to the next generation of players which is just amazing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When you look at the campaign and see the 21 legacy players who are involved, it&#8217;s so humbling to be amongst that group of women.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I know the one and only Debbie Lee has her studs in one of the boots and bits of every one of those legacy players boots are being carried on.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a really proud moment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Loynes said she was even more chuffed to find out her boots had been donated to a AFLW league best and fairest winner and friend in Emily Bates.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_118403\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-118403\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-118403 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/10\/EmilyBateswithbespok_63863.jpg?_t=1696384715\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-118403\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Emily Bates with the recrafted pair of boots.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To have played a part in inspiring athletes like Emily is very cool.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Emily has won a league best and fairest award and is an absolute champion already.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;She&#8217;s now moved from Brisbane to Hawthorn and is still playing a dominant role in the league.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s fantastic to see women like Emily continuing to progress the sport forward.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A TORQUAY local and former AFLW captain has inspired the next generation of female football athletes by gifting her boots to embody the spirit of women&#8217;s sporting progress.
