THE Queenscliff Coast Guard has put a nearly $5,000 grant from the federal government to good use, buying state-of-the-art wet-weather gear.<\/p>\n

The grant was part of round eight of the Stronger Communities Program (SCP), which provided $22.7 million to fund small capital projects in each of the 151 federal electorates.<\/p>\n

Queenscliff Coast Guard community engagement officer John McMillan said the grant would be used to purchase seven sets of clothing for the local rescue team.<\/p>\n

“Our plan is to have all sets in our hands within the next two weeks.<\/p>\n

“Currently we have purchased three sets to gauge the most useful sizes for our team.<\/p>\n

“This clothing is very high-end and will give our rescue crew maximum protection and comfort when operating in adverse conditions.<\/p>\n

“It represents a major improvement on current and past protective garments.”<\/p>\n

Queenscliff Coast Guard deputy commander Christopher Smith said he was grateful for the new wet-weather gear.<\/p>\n

“In Victoria, marine rescue units do not receive the same level of support enjoyed by our volunteer colleagues in other emergency services.<\/p>\n

“As a consequence, we rely heavily on local fund-raising activities supplemented by grant applications to finance our ongoing operation.”<\/p>\n

Corangamite federal member Libby Coker visited the Queenscliff Coast Guard’s base last month to share the good news.<\/p>\n

She said the SCP grant would ensure the unit had the equipment to do their job effectively and return safely to their families<\/p>\n

“I am delighted this grant offers a lifeline for those who tirelessly protect our shores, often facing the harshest of conditions.<\/p>\n

“The Queenscliff Coast Guard rescue team stands as a guardian of the sea, safeguarding lives through rain and shine.<\/p>\n

“However, they face unique challenges during wet and stormy weather where the need for protective clothing becomes paramount.<\/p>\n

“Thanks to this federal grant, these brave emergency workers will receive state-of-the-art, wet-weather gear.<\/p>\n

“This isn’t just about staying dry, it’s about enhancing safety, increasing efficiency, and ensuring our heroes are well-equipped to carry out their vital duties.”<\/p>\n

The SCP provides grants of between $2,500 and $20,000 to community organisations and local governments for projects that deliver social benefits for local communities.<\/p>\n

A variety of projects have been funded over the eight rounds, including upgrades to community halls and clubhouses, equipment for both aged care and day care facilities, men’s sheds and associated equipment, scoreboards, computers, inflatable rescue boats and disaster recovery generators.<\/p>\n
