{"id":77465,"date":"2023-10-25T04:30:11","date_gmt":"2023-10-24T17:30:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=77465"},"modified":"2023-10-19T13:34:12","modified_gmt":"2023-10-19T02:34:12","slug":"volunteer-projects-to-clean-up-lake-connewarre","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/volunteer-projects-to-clean-up-lake-connewarre\/","title":{"rendered":"Volunteer projects to clean up Lake Connewarre"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CONSERVATION Volunteers Australia (CVA) is in need of help as part of the ongoing efforts to restore Lake Connewarre.<\/p>\n<p>The organisation is running four separate projects between now and December to revive the internationally recognised Ramsar wetlands at the lake and the surrounding Bellarine Peninsula.<\/p>\n<p>Managed by Parks Victoria, the Lake Connewarre State Game Reserve is one of Victoria&#8217;s most significant wetland areas and one of the largest estuaries in the state.<\/p>\n<p>The Barwon River and associated lakes, swamps and floodplains connected to Lake Connewarre have estuarine fauna not found elsewhere along the Victorian coast, including species specially adapted to saltwater and freshwater conditions.<\/p>\n<p>This Sunday, October 22, immerse in well-being and biodiversity awareness at Edwards Point Wildlife Reserve, in conjunction with Parks Victoria, for Mental Health Week.<\/p>\n<p>Participants will craft seed bombs and cards with sustainable designer Emma Grace, filled with native plants to enhance biodiversity, engage in a therapeutic weeding session for relaxation and nature connection, and explore sbeach views at the reserve.<\/p>\n<p>Open to families and all ages, light lunch will be provided.<\/p>\n<p>Join CVA and Parks Victoria on Thursday, October 26 for a unique coastal clean-up at Avalon Coastal Reserve, known for its birdwatching and Ramsar wetland status.<\/p>\n<p>Participants in the Shorebird Sanctuary Sweep will help protect the habitat of endangered birds by clearing plastic debris.<\/p>\n<p>This site holds cultural and international significance, so the cleanup wiill not only protect shorebird habitat but also collect crucial litter data for CSIRO research. Morning tea is provided.<\/p>\n<p>For Mangrove Month during November, the November 24 session will be dedicated to the preservation of these vital coastal ecosystems.<\/p>\n<p>Participants will embrace the spirit of conservation as they embark on a hands-on rubbish collection initiative, safeguarding the health of mangrove habitats.<\/p>\n<p>Explore the beauty of mangroves from a unique perspective on a guided canoeing adventure down the Barwon River, led by experts from the Victorian Fisheries Authority, with morning tea included.<\/p>\n<p>On December 12, unite with the Friends of Edwards Point and Parks Victoria at Edwards Point Wildlife Reserve to contribute to restoration of the last remaining coastal woodlands on the Bellarine through a hands-on weeding session.<\/p>\n<p>This project will be targeting the invasive South African orchid, which begins its growth cycle in summer.<\/p>\n<p>The works will directly preserve a Ramsar-designated site and international flyway, with participants also enjoying morning tea and views from the Two Bays Lookout.<\/p>\n<p>For more information or to book your place, head to the Conservation Volunteers Melbourne Facebook page at <a href=\"http:\/\/facebook.com\/groups\/cvmelbourne\">facebook.com\/groups\/cvmelbourne<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CONSERVATION Volunteers Australia (CVA) is in need of help as part of the ongoing efforts to restore Lake Connewarre.
