THE Royal Geelong Yacht Club has put out the call for volunteers to sign up to assist with the delivery of the 2024 Festival of Sails.<\/p>\n

The largest keelboat racing regatta in the Southern Hemisphere will return for its 181st edition on January 26 for three days of non-stop action.<\/p>\n

Organisers are hopeful they can secure upward of 200 volunteers this year.<\/p>\n

Volunteers will take on all matter of jobs both in and out of the water.<\/p>\n

Festival of Sails volunteer coordinator, Daniella D’Amore said volunteers are integral in the success of the event.<\/p>\n

“What do they do? Oh, my goodness, what don’t they do! Everything from greeting and assisting, helping to direct visitors, moving gear around the yacht club, running errands, setting up, packing up, there’s literally almost nothing they won’t do,” she said.<\/p>\n

“And you know what, it’s always with a smile. They’re an amazing bunch, who just have such a good time.”<\/p>\n

On-water volunteer coordinator, Mike Lander said safety and efficiency were the key focuses for his team throughout the festival.<\/p>\n

“There’s a lot to do during a busy and important regatta. Boat drivers, mark layers, timekeepers, race officers and volunteer officials, everyone has an important role to play,” he said.<\/p>\n

Festival of Sails chairman, Paul Buchholz applauded the loyal legion of volunteers who continue to turn out each year.<\/p>\n

“They are an extraordinary group of people and there’s such a genuine bond of friendship amongst them,” he said.<\/p>\n

“While they have a great time, the truth is we just couldn’t run this event without them. It just wouldn’t happen, so we are always so grateful for their loyalty and hard work.”<\/p>\n
