FAMILIES in the Geelong region with children suffering from epilepsy will receive special support packs, which include essential support and advice from specialist Registered Nurses.<\/p>\n
These packs are part of Epilepsy Action Australia\u2019s Ted-E-Bear Connection program.<\/p>\n
Each pack, containing a teddy bear, also provides parents with vital epilepsy information, including online peer support, seizure-safety workshops, and opportunities for telehealth education from an Epilepsy Nurse.<\/p>\n
This initiative is expected to assist some of the estimated 420 children under the age of 10 in the area who are living with epilepsy.<\/p>\n
Epilepsy Action Australia CEO Carol Ireland highlights the multifaceted benefits of these packs.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese bears bring smiles, and so much more,\u201d said Ms Ireland<\/p>\n
\u201cParents of past participants tell us their child\u2019s teddy is a comfort and a friend, helping them cope better with distressing seizures, hospitalisations, medical tests or the loneliness of feeling different.\u201d<\/p>\n
This support not only aids the children but also helps parents with their own mental health by alleviating their fears about seizures and their child’s wellbeing.<\/p>\n
It connects them with other families and fosters a healthy home environment that benefits everyone in the family.<\/p>\n
The national Ted-E-Bear program has been made possible in the Geelong Region with the help from a grant from the Anthony Costa Foundation.<\/p>\n
Chair of the Anthony Costa Foundation Board Rhonda Arnott said they were pleased to support the program.<\/p>\n
\u201cEvery child deserves the opportunity to thrive despite the challenges they may face,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Registrations are now open for children with epilepsy under 10 years and their families from the City of Greater Geelong, Surf Coast Shire, Borough of Queenscliffe, Golden Plains Shire, and Colac Otway Shire.<\/p>\n
