THE Portarlington Mussel Festival, starting as a street event in 2007, is now one of Victoria’s most popular festivals, with more than 10,000 visitors expected.<\/p>\n

Scheduled for Saturday, January 13, it has directed over $250,000 to community initiatives, thanks to a dedicated volunteer team.<\/p>\n

Sea Bounty’s Lance Wiffen, with 30 years in the fishing industry, plays a significant role.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

“We grow mussels and sell them all throughout Australia and all around the world,” Mr Wiffen said.<\/p>\n

In 2021, he expanded his operations with Portarlington Mussel Tours, combining education and gastronomy to highlight sustainable mussel farming.<\/p>\n

“We thought it would be nice to show people the beautiful product we produce and how environmentally sustainable it is.”<\/p>\n

The festival’s growth mirrors the industry’s evolution.<\/p>\n

Today, it not only celebrates mussels but has become a platform showcasing the Bellarine Peninsula’s food and wine culture.<\/p>\n

Visitors can expect a full taste of the region, including local wines and beers.<\/p>\n

“It’s a great day for people to come down and enjoy all the festive things that are offered,” Mr Wiffen said.<\/p>\n

“People are able to walk through the park and taste a wide variety of cook-ups and then take some mussels home with them.”<\/p>\n

Portarlington Mussel Festival president Richard Underwood said the event is one not to be missed.<\/p>\n

“We have five fabulous stages\u2026 we will be welcoming back some favourites including Soul Sister Swing and Jimi Hocking.”<\/p>\n

“Our main act Will be Queen Forever, who was a huge hit for us a couple of years ago.”<\/p>\n

Bellarine MP Alison Marchant lauds the festival’s role in the region’s tourism.<\/p>\n

As a regular volunteer, she sees it as a prime opportunity to showcase the area’s exceptional food, wine, coastline, and heritage.<\/p>\n

“It brings so many visitors to our region and it’s a great opportunity to showcase our incredible food and wine producers, stunning coastlines and historic townships,” she said.<\/p>\n

“I look forward to volunteering on the day, being out with the community and I can’t wait to see everyone there.”<\/p>\n
