{"id":80531,"date":"2024-01-18T01:11:03","date_gmt":"2024-01-17T14:11:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=80531"},"modified":"2024-01-17T14:20:21","modified_gmt":"2024-01-17T03:20:21","slug":"gripper-to-play-west-african-rhythms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/living\/gripper-to-play-west-african-rhythms\/","title":{"rendered":"Gripper to play West African rhythms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Globally renowned South African guitarist Derek Gripper willbring his immersive concert experience, <\/strong><em><strong>Music from the Strings of Mali<\/strong><\/em><strong>, to Australia, including in Geelong on Monday, January 22.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The show features a unique blend of West African rhythms, timeless classical, and inspiring melodies from Toumani Diabat\u00e9, Arvo P\u00e4rt and Bach.<\/p>\n<p>The national tour, which starts today (Friday, January 19) in Adelaide, follows a string of successful sold-out shows in the United States of America, including back-to-back performances in Washington, plus tours in Europe and South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>It will be Gripper\u2019s first Australian tour since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Gripper has gained international acclaim for his groundbreaking work in transcribing and recording some of the most intricate compositions of the kora, a 21-stringed West African harp, onto acoustic guitar.<\/p>\n<p>His groundbreaking technique of translating these sounds offer music lovers a unique immersive musical exploration that bridges continents and genres.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Returning to Australia is a special moment for me, marking my first tour here since the pandemic,&#8221; Gripper said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The <em>Music from the Strings of Mali<\/em> tour is a celebration of the rich African repertoire that I&#8217;ve been honored to bring to the classical guitar.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I look forward to sharing the magic and cultural diversity of this music with Australian audiences.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Gripper&#8217;s journey began with the release of his first album, <em>One Night on Earth<\/em>, his initial venture into kora translations.<\/p>\n<p>The album drew praise from celebrated Australia classical guitarist John Williams, who proclaimed it &#8220;absolutely impossible until I heard Derek Gripper do it\u201d, while kora maestro Toumani Diabat\u00e9 asked for confirmation that it was indeed just one person playing.<\/p>\n<p>Both later invited Gripper to collaborate with them &#8211; he performed with Williams in London\u2019s Shakespeare\u2019s Globe and King\u2019s Place, and with Diabat\u00e9 and his Symmetric Orchestra at the Acoustik Festival Bamako in Mali.<\/p>\n<p>Derek Gripper will play <em>Music from the Strings of Mali<\/em> at Geelong West Town Hall on Monday, January 22 from 7pm.<\/p>\n<p>For more information or for tickets, head to <a href=\"http:\/\/concertsaustralia.com\/derek-geelong\"><strong>concertsaustralia.com\/derek-geelong<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Globally renowned South African guitarist Derek Gripper willbring his immersive concert experience, Music from the Strings of Mali, to Australia, including in Geelong on Monday, January 22.
