THE Southern Hemisphere’s biggest sailing regatta, the Festival of Sails, gets underway tomorrow (Friday, January 26), kicking off a huge weekend of sport in the Greater Geelong region.<\/p>\n

More than 100,000 people are slated to descend on the Geelong waterfront for the event, providing a huge cash injection to the local economy and furthering the area\u2019s strong reputation for premium sporting events.<\/p>\n

The 181st running of the Passage Race from Melbourne to Geelong opens the Festival of Sails regatta early tomorrow morning.<\/p>\n

Friday’s entertainment will also include a flyover by the heritage RAAF 100 Squadron at 1pm, followed by the annual Festival of Sails Fireworks at 9.30pm.<\/p>\n

Festival of Sails chair Paul Buchholz said excitement had reached fever pitch for the premium sailing event.<\/p>\n

\u201cSailors from all over Australia really love this event,” he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday\u2019s opening Passage Race from Melbourne to Geelong is really something to see as almost 300 boats of all shapes and sizes battle it out for line and class honours to mark the start of this amazing regatta.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd this year, for the first time in a long time, we\u2019ve also reintroduced a Mornington to Geelong Passage Race as well and there\u2019s a real buzz around that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Outside the \u201cfast and furious sailing\u201d, Mr Buchholz said the Festival of Sails has a \u201chard-won reputation\u201d for its great entertainment and party atmosphere.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis year is no different.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe lineup of performances over the weekend is terrific and I reckon there\u2019s something it in for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Event entertainment highlights include rock band Body Type, ARIA winners Southern Sons, the Australian INXS Show, alongside new and emerging artists, family favourites the Mik Maks and the Royal Australian Navy Band.<\/p>\n

A series of sailing presentations, family friendly activities and sailing opportunities will also feature over the weekend.<\/p>\n
