THE 26-year rivalry of the Wieland Shield lifesaving competition between California and Victoria returns to local shores tomorrow (Friday, January 26), as teams battle it out for the famous trophy.<\/p>\n
The anticipated lifesaving competition between top tier lifeguard teams from both areas will take place at Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club tomorrow and is due to wrap up Saturday afternoon at Anglesea Beach.<\/p>\n
Dating back to 1967, the event brings a team of six female and male swimmers, Ironmen and Women, paddlers, runners and surf skiers to the Surf Coast and Bellarine.<\/p>\n
It has evolved into a thrilling showdown where lifeguards not only engage in healthy competition but also learn different lifesaving skills and practices from one another.<\/p>\n
Life Saving Victoria general manager of sports participation, Ryan O’Connor said the event was a great celebration of the spirit of lifesaving sport.<\/p>\n
“The Wieland Shield competition goes beyond a racing and friendly rivalry; it’s a platform for sharing lifesaving ideas.<\/p>\n
“Differences in our systems make this event a unique opportunity for competition, learning and growth.”<\/p>\n
