The former sawmill settlement on the banks of the Macalister River has been transformed into a special camp for children.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is owned and operated by the Lions Clubs of Victoria and southern NSW. It is also powered by 288 solar panels and 120 batteries.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_81117\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-81117\" style=\"width: 529px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-81117 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/01\/IMG_2037-scaled.jpg?_t=1706435231\" alt=\"\" width=\"529\" height=\"397\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/01\/IMG_2037-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/01\/IMG_2037-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/01\/IMG_2037-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/01\/IMG_2037-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/01\/IMG_2037-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/01\/IMG_2037-2048x1536.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 529px) 100vw, 529px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-81117\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Raft building was a major activity for camp participants.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>More than 30 volunteers assisted the students over the five days.<\/p>\n<p>Through confined living, the students learnt about cooperation, helping each other, and organisation skills while taking on a range of activities such as the high ropes course, raft building, and the flying fox.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Claringbold said he was grateful to the community for their assistance in sending the local students to Camp Licola this year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our commitment to Licola is only possibly from the support of local businesses and families.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It costs $500 per student for them to attend Camp Licola, meaning we needed $4,000 to send our group of eight students.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s the community&#8217;s generosity that made it possible.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mr Claringbold said supporters of this year&#8217;s fundraising efforts included Bendigo Bank Barwon Heads, Bellarine Property, Barwon Heads Pharmacy, Barwon Heads Hotel, Barwon Coast, Smith and Sons, Direct Chemist Outlet Ocean Grove, Carah Family, Deb\/Kirk McNamara, Barb\/Mick Cummins, Robyn\/Lloyd Smith, Margaret Addison, Kim Caddy and the customers of Piping Hot Chicken and Burger Bar, Kyosk, The Olive Pit, Napona and White Hart Coffee Bar.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MORE than 100 students from the Geelong region have returned home from an annual multi-day camp earlier this month, equipped with new skills to tackle their studies and deal with future challenges.
