{"id":81217,"date":"2024-02-01T04:00:44","date_gmt":"2024-01-31T17:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=81217"},"modified":"2024-01-31T16:39:08","modified_gmt":"2024-01-31T05:39:08","slug":"victoria-claim-wieland-shield","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/sport\/victoria-claim-wieland-shield\/","title":{"rendered":"Victoria claim Wieland Shield"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>VICTORIA emerged victorious against California over the long weekend in the prestigious Wieland Shield lifesaving competition.<\/p>\n<p>The best athletes from both areas gathered at Ocean Grove beach and Anglesea beach for a healthy and competitive battle of the fittest.<\/p>\n<p>The event, which returned for the first time since 2018, saw teams compete in races including surf ski, swimming, board relay, taplin and run-swim-run.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_126741\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-126741\" style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-126741 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/01\/IMG_0529.jpg?_t=1706582005\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"295\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-126741\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Racers heading off from the start line.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Victoria led early in proceedings on Friday last week with some strong results, before putting their foot down on Saturday to claim the overall points score 84 to 66.<\/p>\n<p>Life Saving Victoria general manager of sports participation Ryan O&#8217;Connor said it was thrilling to see everyone back on the beach.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_126742\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-126742\" style=\"width: 518px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-126742 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/01\/IMG_0530.jpg?_t=1706582009\" alt=\"\" width=\"518\" height=\"330\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-126742\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Athletes competed in surf and swim events.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was the first one held since the pandemic, so it was great to have some healthy competition going again between these two powerhouses.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Wieland Shield, which dates back to 1967 is not just about competition, its friendships, it&#8217;s the exchanging of vital lifesaving information and a full cultural exchange.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We had 10 debutants on the team for Victoria from various local clubs, highlighted by some great performances from youngsters Mia Cook, Jemma and Paige Holt and Xavier Purcell.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Talks are already in place for the Victoria to head to California in the next few years.
