Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Seismic blasting for undersea fossil fuel exploration, involving blasts louder than atomic bombs at 250 decibels, is conducted non-stop for months using air guns on ships.<\/p>\n<p>Critics argue it harms marine life, from tiny zooplankton to whales, including endangered species.<\/p>\n<p>The month-long Great Ocean Rescue Tour, aligning with the summer tourist season along the Great Ocean Road, sought to highlight these harmful effects.<\/p>\n<p>The tour began on January 5 in Barwon Heads with the Surfrider Foundation&#8217;s &#8220;Southern Blast&#8221; documentary, followed by a <a href=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/hundreds-of-residents-rally-in-ocean-grove-against-seismic-blasting\/\">street rally in Ocean Grove<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It continued with events in Torquay, Wye River, Apollo Bay, Port Fairy, and Warrnambool, drawing thousands over several weekends.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/review-of-offshore-regulations-under-way-as-community-continues-to-rally\/\">Apollo Bay&#8217;s rally had 350 participants<\/a>, including local fishers supporting OCEAN, marching to the foreshore.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_127189\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-127189\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-127189 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/02\/CopyofDJI_0071_15654-600x380.jpg?_t=1707008332\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-127189\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Great Ocean Tour began on 5 January in Barwon Heads, followed by a street rally in Ocean Grove and continued with events in Torquay, Wye River, Apollo Bay, Port Fairy, and Warrnambool. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Last Sunday&#8217;s rally and paddle out in Warrnambool attracted hundreds of surfers and spectators who rallied at the waterfront to express their objection to the two proposals to seismic blast more than 45,000sqkm of ocean directly off their coast.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus Nolle from the Apollo Bay Fishermen&#8217;s Co-operative said the science proved seismic blasting was damaging.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Seismic blasting kills the southern rock lobster at every stage of its development.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The larvae are pulverised by the blasts whilst the adult fish have their balance mechanism damaged and they become susceptible to predation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Gunditjmara woman Yaraan Couzens Bundle said the home of &#8220;Koontapool&#8221;, the southern right whale, was under direct threat from seismic blasting.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We as First Peoples, we don&#8217;t own the land, we belong to it, and those connections span back eons of time.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In Gundijmara Country, seismic blasting can never coexist peacefully with ancient living creation songlines and our sacred traditions.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_127191\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-127191\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-127191 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/02\/Droneshot_1MattHrkac_15703-600x380.jpg?_t=1707009448\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-127191\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Campaigners say seismic blasting will be biggest election issue in the region next election.
