{"id":81595,"date":"2024-02-08T04:19:35","date_gmt":"2024-02-07T17:19:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=81595"},"modified":"2024-02-07T22:35:03","modified_gmt":"2024-02-07T11:35:03","slug":"west-coast-wax-up-fires-at-possos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/sport\/west-coast-wax-up-fires-at-possos\/","title":{"rendered":"West Coast Wax Up fires at Possos"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>VICTORIA&#8217;s best longboard surfers dazzled in perfect waves at Point Impossible Beach on Saturday for the West Coast Wax Up event.<\/p>\n<p>More than 60 competitors from the Surf Coast, Bellarine Peninsula, Mornington Peninsula and Phillip Island congregated to celebrate traditional longboarding in a fun and inclusive manner.<\/p>\n<p>All participants surfed twice throughout the day in the longboard divisions, while an old mal expression session and team&#8217;s extravaganza also got the energy pumping.<\/p>\n<p>In the men&#8217;s longboard discipline, it was Matt &#8220;Mr Consistency&#8221; Lumley who took home the title.<\/p>\n<p>The Torquay local was able to lock away four strong rides in his two heats to take home top honours and a $200 cheque.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_127445\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-127445\" style=\"width: 356px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-127445 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/02\/IMG_3709_35828.jpg?_t=1707305287\" alt=\"\" width=\"356\" height=\"475\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-127445\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Matt Lumley was victorious in the men&#8217;s longboard division. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the women&#8217;s field, 2023 Victorian Longboard Champion Molly Powell looked in unstoppable form, collecting four fantastic scores to sit atop the leaderboard at the end of proceedings.<\/p>\n<p>Powell&#8217;s style and grace scored highly with the judges, while her strong powerful turns also stood out from the crowd.<\/p>\n<p>Jack McKenzie took out the overall title for the old malibu division, impressing the judges with his effortless precision and gracious noseriding.<\/p>\n<p>South Coast Surfboards left it to the last moments to score the win in the hotly contested teams division.<\/p>\n<p>The local surfboard manufacturer ran the clock right down to the wire, with world tour competitor Ben Considine putting the icing on the cake with a fantastic ride just before the buzzer.<\/p>\n<p>West Coast Wax Up event director Glenn Barry said the surfing classic far exceeded expectations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It took a journey of its own on Saturday and was bigger than what I anticipated.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_127446\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-127446\" style=\"width: 345px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-127446 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/02\/IMG_3711_35860.jpg?_t=1707305287\" alt=\"\" width=\"345\" height=\"460\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-127446\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Women&#8217;s winner Molly Powell. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It blew my mind, the amount of people who came to see this type of surfing and to also compete.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There were families everywhere, and the cars were backed up almost one kilometre down the road. It was incredible.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The surfing matched the vibe as well.
