CORANGAMITE Catchment Management Authority (CCMA) will host a series of events to celebrate the ecological significance of the Ramsar Wetlands.<\/p>\n

From today (February 12) to February 16, CCMA will celebrate Ramsar Week and raise awareness of the importance and value of wetland habitats for humans and animal life.<\/p>\n

CCMA manages the land, vegetation and water resources of two local Ramsar-listed wetland systems.<\/p>\n

The wetlands cover 22,694 hectares of the Port Phillip Bay (Western Shoreline) and Bellarine Peninsula and 32,898 hectares at Western District Lakes near Camperdown.<\/p>\n

The week-long Ramsar Week celebrations will feature more than ten hands-on activities to get individuals up close with the wetlands.<\/p>\n

A bird ID walk at Lake Martin and Avalon Saltworks, canoe tours of Swan Bay, Corangamite water skink surveying and an orange-bellied parrot information session will all feature.<\/p>\n

CCMA project officer of biodiversity Rachel Beecham said the authority was thrilled to offer events to upskill those in the community.<\/p>\n

“These sessions will help community gain valuable knowledge and tools to contribute to the preservation of these ecologically significant wetlands.”<\/p>\n

“Ramsar Week is a testament to the commitment to environmental stewardship, inviting people to connect with the richness of the plants and diverse wildlife thriving in their local landscapes.”<\/p>\n
