A COMMUNITY cricket match held last month in Barwon Heads has resulted in a kind gesture between two local community organisations.<\/p>\n
The Lions Club of Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads donated $800 to the Barwon Heads Fire Brigade to assist with day-to-day operations, from funds raised at the annual Barwon Heads Football Club and Barwon Heads Cricket Club grudge cricket match.<\/p>\n
Lions club president Alan Daw said all funds raised on the day were done through barbecue proceeds obtained at the match.<\/p>\n
“Barwon Heads CFA is very fortunate to have 30 passionate volunteers.<\/p>\n
“The operational firefighters were called out 89 times last year to a variety of incidents, including vehicle accidents, house fires, gas leaks and grass and scrub fires.<\/p>\n
“For the past 88 years they have been serving the local community as well as the Bellarine Peninsula.<\/p>\n
“They also assist throughout Victoria and interstate when called upon for emergencies.”<\/p>\n
The local brigade is in the middle of its busiest period of the year, training twice a week on Tuesday nights and Sunday mornings to maintain their skills at its local base on Sheepwash Road.<\/p>\n
They have earmarked the donation for new equipment and technology, which is a major focus for the brigade.<\/p>\n
The brigade recently purchased helmet torches and a thermal imaging camera.<\/p>\n
“The Lions Club of Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads will continue to support the CFA and local community organisations,” Mr Daw added.<\/p>\n
“Volunteers are the lifeblood of all communities across Australia.”<\/p>\n
