{"id":83511,"date":"2024-03-20T16:45:17","date_gmt":"2024-03-20T05:45:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/surfing-trio-stars-in-new-documentary\/"},"modified":"2024-03-21T09:51:13","modified_gmt":"2024-03-20T22:51:13","slug":"surfing-trio-stars-in-new-documentary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/living\/surfing-trio-stars-in-new-documentary\/","title":{"rendered":"Surfing trio stars in new documentary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The <\/strong><em><strong>T<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>rilogy: New Wave<\/strong><\/em><strong> documentary tells the story of three professional surfers trying to balance their careers with friendships and a desire to rediscover the joy of surfing.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The 74-minute film is based off Taylor Steele\u2019s original <em>Trilogy<\/em> film that was released in 2007.<\/p>\n<p><em>Trilogy: New Wave<\/em>, presented by Billabong, follows the lives of Ethan Ewing, Seth Moniz, and Griffin Colapinto.<\/p>\n<p>Exploring their personal histories, motivations and individual philosophies, the documentary sees Ewing, Moniz and Colapinto take on with some of the world&#8217;s best surfers while trying to maintain their love of the sport.<\/p>\n<p>Director Andrew McKenzie was on a surf trip of his own when he ran into the athletes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI ended up seeing some of the footage that they got from that trip and the idea just immediately struck me that there\u2019s an opportunity to create a new <em>Trilogy<\/em> film,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_130411\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-130411\" style=\"width: 602px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-130411 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/03\/Trilogy-Internal-Images-95-1-1024x1024.jpg?_t=1710913450\" alt=\"\" width=\"602\" height=\"602\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-130411\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The documentary follows the lives of three professional surfers as they navigate their careers.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>McKenzie said it had always been a goal of his to work on a feature length film, and it was \u201ca really cool experience.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat made me really want to do this was just getting to work with these athletes and telling their stories.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think they\u2019re all unique and incredible talents and that much is obvious if you watch their surfing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat isn\u2019t as obvious is just how good of human beings they are, and they\u2019re all such good guys and really good friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The documentary was filmed over two years, travelling to eight remote countries around the world, telling their story of success and friendship.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe athletes really committed to the film and really put their all into it, and were surfing endless hours, seven-hour sessions to no end.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re really getting out to some of the most remote areas of the world and really on our own for most of the film, so we became a really close unit and really close friends through the process.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_130409\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-130409\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-130409 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/03\/Trilogy-Internal-Images-29-2-1024x683.jpg?_t=1710913403\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-130409\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Trilogy: New Wave is based off Taylor Steele&#8217;s original 2007 film &#8216;Trilogy&#8217;.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>McKenzie said the cinematography in this film and using today\u2019s tools had taken the documentary to the next level.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTelling the story of these three individuals and their personal stories and their trials and tribulations and really trying to give some depth to the film, so it\u2019s approachable for a non-surfer as much as a core surfer would love it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ewing was the 2023 Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach champion and is a surf contender for the 2024 Paris Olympics.<\/p>\n<p>Colapinto is presently ranked number one in the World Surf League Championship Tour with Ewing coming in at number two.<\/p>\n<p><em>Trilogy: New Wave<\/em> will be screened at Reading Cinemas Waurn Ponds this Saturday, March 23, including a special Q&amp;A featuring the tree surfers.<\/p>\n<p>For more information and tickets, head to <a href=\"https:\/\/readingcinemas.com.au\/movies\/details\/waurnponds\/8843\"><strong>The <\/strong><em><strong>T<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>rilogy<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Trilogy: New Wave documentary tells the story of three professional surfers trying to balance their careers with friendships and a desire to rediscover the joy of surfing.
