FRIENDS of the Bluff, with funding from Barwon Coast, have unveiled a comprehensive guide titled “Life on the Edge,” spotlighting the diverse animal and plant life inhabiting the Barwon Bluff Marine Sanctuary.<\/p>\n
This sanctuary, nestled at the mouth of the Barwon River in Barwon Heads, spans 17 hectares of both sandstone and basalt reefs, providing a rich habitat for marine life and kelp forests.<\/p>\n
First published in 2011 the reworked guide explores the sanctuary’s unique ecosystem, where life thrives amidst the challenges of changing tides, pounding waves, and shifting sands.<\/p>\n
From giant kelps to delicate algal lattices and tiny crustaceans, “Life on the Edge” details the resilience and beauty of species adapted to this rugged environment.<\/p>\n
Key to the book’s redevelopment was Deakin University student Charlie Darcy who spearhead the production through layout, design and text editing.<\/p>\n
Mr Darcy thanked Barwon Coast and other stakeholders.<\/p>\n
“I would like to thank everyone who was involved, Friends of the Bluff, there were so many people that came together for the project,” he said.<\/p>\n
Mr Darcy said people can take the book with them as they walk around exploring the Bluff.<\/p>\n
“I hope people develop a bit more appreciation, particularly from some of the smaller creatures around the bluff.”<\/p>\n
The marine animal life at the Bluff is diverse, with the guide featuring herbivores, carnivores, scavengers, and detritivores.<\/p>\n
Special attention is given to sponges, known for their vivid colours and intricate filtering systems, and crustaceans, which play a vital role in the sanctuary’s ecosystem.<\/p>\n
Barwon Bluff’s significance extends beyond its biological diversity.<\/p>\n
The area is an important cultural site for the local Wadawurrung People and offers invaluable educational opportunities for students and teachers keen on learning about Victoria’s marine and coastal environments.<\/p>\n
