A NEW Probus Club has been formed in Point Lonsdale following their initial meeting on March 7.<\/p>\n

The purpose of the inaugural meeting was to gauge the community interest in a new club and to select the committee.<\/p>\n

Probus Clubs are designed to bring those who are retired or semi-retired together with a range of activities and outings in a social environment.<\/p>\n

Helen Grant was appointed as president and said they were impressed by the amount of people who have shown interest in the club.<\/p>\n

Ms Grant has recently given up full time employment and went along to the initial Probus meeting to see what it was all about.<\/p>\n

“I’ve always been very impressed by the outings and the camaraderie the probus presents to people and the opportunity to be part of a group.<\/p>\n

“When you retire, sometimes you don’t have a lot of friends because they have passed away or they’re living elsewhere, and it can be quite a lonely time and you don’t have the confidence to go and join groups.<\/p>\n

“I found probus to be incredibly encouraging and I liked what I heard, and I liked what I saw, and I don’t regret it.”<\/p>\n

The new club have got their first guest speaker lined up with the opportunity to hold a range of activities in the future.<\/p>\n

“It’ll be things that are of interest, things that stretch your mind and outings, I believe Probus has a history of going on bus tours, going away for weekend travel, so I think there’s a large variety of opportunities for people,” Ms Grant said.<\/p>\n

She said at the moment the club is still finding their way and taking “baby steps” in encouraging people to join.<\/p>\n

“I think the word is out and about that people are wanting to be a part of it, so I can only envisage long term plans will be fantastic.”<\/p>\n

Ms Grant is looking forward to more people joining and encourages all those interested to come along to their meeting on April 4 at Point Lonsdale Surf Life Saving Club from 9.30am.<\/p>\n
