<\/p>\nCONSTRUCTION is set to start on an extensive footpath network in Ocean Grove’s “old” and Collendina areas, aiming to enhance pedestrian safety and accessibility.<\/p>\n
Residents are encouraged to look out for signs detailing the coming street works as part of the Ocean Grove Principal Pedestrian Network (PPN).<\/p>\n
This initiative will introduce 24.3km of new pathways over the coming years, with the aim of connecting people more safely to schools, local businesses, and other destinations.<\/p>\n
The project has completed street feature surveys for its first two stages, with detailed design efforts currently in progress.<\/p>\n
The plan for 2023-24 involves the introduction of new footpaths on several streets, starting with the south side of Shell Road West, extending from the reserve entrance to the Bellarine Aquatic & Sports Centre.<\/p>\n

Other areas in stage 1, including Aldebaran Road, Marlin Drive, and various sections of Shell Road East, Thacker Street, Field Street South, and Wallington Road, are in various stages of readiness, with construction underway or awaiting start.<\/p>\n
According to the City of Greater Geelong, some pathways have encountered design challenges due to unforeseen complications such as steep driveways, vegetation, and cultural heritage overlays.<\/p>\n
These paths, along with those designated for Stage 2, are now scheduled for construction in 2024-25.<\/p>\n
Affected areas include sections of The Terrace, Madeley Street, Eggleston Street North, Tuckfield Street, and Blue Waters Drive, among others.<\/p>\n
Despite the challenges, executive director of city infrastructure James Stirton said he was happy with the project’s progress.<\/p>\n
“I’m pleased construction for this ambitious footpath network project is under way.<\/p>\n
“A big thanks to local community members for joining with the City to ensure this new 24.3km of pathway network met their needs and increased accessibility and safety.<\/p>\n
“We’re so excited that construction is in progress and we thank residents and commuters for their patience as the staged works are delivered.<\/p>\n
