THE City of Greater Geelong has launched a new grant scheme with a total pool of $24,000, aiming to celebrate and empower Geelong’s ageing population.<\/p>\n

The initiative offers grants of up to $1,000 for events and activities designed to enhance physical activity, mental health, social connections, and positive ageing experiences for senior citizens.<\/p>\n

City of Greater Geelong mayor Trent Sullivan said the grants would help seniors discover new interests and build meaningful connections.<\/p>\n

“The Positive Ageing Grants that Council provide are all about helping Seniors discover new interests, forge meaningful connections, and access resources that promote their health and wellbeing.<\/p>\n

“Council encourages interested organisations to apply for grants and contribute to building a more age-friendly and inclusive community.”<\/p>\n

Activities eligible for funding include dances, workshops, sporting events, and intergenerational activities, all focusing on promoting a vibrant and inclusive community for those over 55.<\/p>\n

According to the City’s Positive Ageing Strategy 2021-2047, which guides the grants, the objective is to support healthy ageing and increase the participation of seniors in various community activities.<\/p>\n

In 2021, seniors accounted for 31.5% of the City’s population, highlighting the importance of providing support and recognition to this significant demographic.<\/p>\n

Applications for the Positive Ageing Grants opened on 23 March and will close on May 6.<\/p>\n
