{"id":87059,"date":"2024-05-10T08:30:51","date_gmt":"2024-05-09T22:30:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=87059"},"modified":"2024-05-10T14:54:10","modified_gmt":"2024-05-10T04:54:10","slug":"next-stop-geelong-united-acquires-wnbl-license","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/next-stop-geelong-united-acquires-wnbl-license\/","title":{"rendered":"Next stop, Geelong: United acquires WNBL license"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"elementToProof\">THE Geelong community can look forward to supporting another elite-level sporting team, as early as this year, following Geelong United Basketball Association\u2019s acquisition of a WNBL license.<\/p>\n<p>The association\u2019s new WNBL license, purchased by a Geelong-based consortium from league foundation club Melbourne Boomers, was confirmed by Geelong United and Basketball Australia this morning (Friday, May 10).<\/p>\n<p>The announcement means Geelong United will begin play as soon as next season, providing a full pathway for female basketballers in the region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"elementToProof\">Geelong United Basketball chief executive officer Mark Neeld said he was ecstatic for the future opportunities a Geelong-based WNBL team would bring female athletes across the region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe profile of women\u2019s sport as a whole is on a dramatic rise, and locally we\u2019ve seen so many of these women doing great things, particularly in basketball with the NBL1.<\/p>\n<p class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe of course see the growth in basketball first-hand, and want to reward our hard working female athletes with another amazing opportunity to play sport at the highest level right here in their own backyard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_96337\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-96337\" style=\"width: 461px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-96337 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/05\/2H3A4948-scaled.jpg?_t=1715220818\" alt=\"\" width=\"461\" height=\"307\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-96337\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The WNBL has hosted matches inside The Geelong Arena in recent years.
