THE Victorian Local Governance Association (VLGA) is launching its pre-candidate training with two online webinars, aiming to prepare and inform those considering running for council in the upcoming 2024 elections.<\/p>\n

The VLGA’s program of events leading up to the elections includes sessions designed to support potential candidates.<\/p>\n

Participants will hear from experienced local government officials and learn about representing their communities effectively.<\/p>\n

Borough of Queenscliffe Mayor Ross Ebbels said being Mayor was incredibly rewarding.<\/p>\n

‘There are many highlights in the role as Mayor, sometimes it’s the smaller things that can mean the most,” he said.<\/p>\n

“For me personally, the Wirrng Wirrng Queenscliffe Hub project has been the most rewarding.<\/p>\n

“This project spanned two Council terms during which I was on Council, so I was there for the duration of the project.”<\/p>\n

To encourage a diverse range of candidates, the free seminars will provide insights into the role of local government and what to expect if elected.<\/p>\n

The webinars will cover topics such as the responsibilities of councillors, how local councils operate, and key issues to consider when standing for council.<\/p>\n

The free online webinars are scheduled for Friday, 17 May, and Friday, 24 May.<\/p>\n

Interested individuals must register to attend.<\/p>\n

All voting in council elections is by post. The VEC will send out ballot packs to enrolled voters.<\/p>\n

All council elections across the Victoria are held in October except for Moira Shire Council which was dismissed by an Act of Parliament in March 2023. They will have elections in October 2028.<\/p>\n
