{"id":87713,"date":"2024-05-24T01:20:42","date_gmt":"2024-05-23T15:20:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=87713"},"modified":"2024-05-23T08:30:32","modified_gmt":"2024-05-22T22:30:32","slug":"swapping-the-books-for-the-tools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/education\/swapping-the-books-for-the-tools\/","title":{"rendered":"Swapping the books for the tools"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>FROM a third-year psychology student to a pre-apprenticeship in building and construction, Caleb Smith has made an interesting career change.<\/p>\n<p>Following the advice of his former high school careers adviser, Mr Smith made the switch and has picked up the tools on the way to his dream of becoming a carpenter.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Smith said he was under the assumption being a chippy was the easy option.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I studied psychology for three years and found out that it wasn&#8217;t for me,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I decided to change paths completely to pursue something I&#8217;ve always known, which is working with my hands.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 599px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/05\/4Caleb_PreApprentice_87581.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"599\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Caleb Smith made the swap from studying psychology to undertaking a pre-apprenticeship in building and construction. Photos: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The attraction of practical learning appealed to him the most, praising the teachers at The Gordon for their supportive nature, hands-on approach and industry connections.<\/p>\n<p>Students undertaking the pre-apprenticeship course are introduced to the fundamentals of construction, learning everything about building\u00a0a house.<\/p>\n<p>Carpentry teacher Adam Games said the four-month course is about learning the basics and boosting confidence in the trade.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s great for anyone who wants to pick up handy skills for home projects or pathway into a career as a carpentry apprentice.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Plus, by teaching what employers are looking for, this course sets students up with the confidence to step straight into the workforce.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For Mr Smith, the skills he&#8217;s been taught are easily transferable and can be applied to real life scenarios.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 601px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/05\/2Caleb_PreApprentice_87611.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"601\" height=\"751\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mr Smith hopes to one day use his skills to build an escape room.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>He said he&#8217;s enjoyed learning with people like him, both older and younger.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Anyone can learn the skills to work on their own home, or for an apprenticeship in carpentry.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have a few people who have come onto this course just to learn how to fix up their own houses.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>With the goal of one day building an escape room, Mr Smith plans to seamlessly transition from his pre-apprenticeship to a carpentry apprenticeship.<\/p>\n<p>Applications to study building and construction this July are open now.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">For more information, head to <a href=\"http:\/\/thegordon.edu.au\">thegordon.edu.au<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>\/\/SPONSORED CONTENT<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>FROM a third-year psychology student to a pre-apprenticeship in building and construction, Caleb Smith has made an interesting career change.
