{"id":87869,"date":"2024-06-02T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-06-01T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=87869"},"modified":"2024-05-29T21:29:04","modified_gmt":"2024-05-29T11:29:04","slug":"barwon-coast-celebrates-its-volunteers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/barwon-coast-celebrates-its-volunteers\/","title":{"rendered":"Barwon Coast celebrates its volunteers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BARWON Coast has held a special event to celebrate the tireless efforts of local volunteer groups caring for the local environment.<\/p>\n<p>The event, held during National Volunteer Week at the 13th Beach SLSC clubhouse, recognised the invaluable contributions made by organisations such as Friends of the Bluff, Friends of the Lobster Pot, Ocean Grove Coastcare, Breamlea Coastcare, Barwon EstuaryWatch, and Friends of the Hooded Plover Bellarine.<\/p>\n<p>Sandy Gatehouse, chair of the Barwon Coast Committee of Management, expressed gratitude to the volunteers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Your passion for preserving our coastal spaces is inspiring,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/06\/BCVW0100_98661.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">LEFT: Bellarine MP Alison Marchant (right) chats with volunteers. RIGHT: Organisations represented at the event included Friends of the Bluff, Friends of the Lobster Pot, Ocean Grove Coastcare, Breamlea Coastcare, Barwon EstuaryWatch, and Friends of the Hooded Plover Bellarine.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;This evening was our chance to formally acknowledge the countless hours you have dedicated to environmental protection, education initiatives and community betterment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Barwon Coast chief executive officer Gareth Smith said the volunteers&#8217; work had made a massive impact.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In January alone during our Coastal Discovery Program, these amazing groups provided experiences for over 1,800 locals and visitors engaging with the Barwon Coast. Photos: MONIKA BERRY<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Special guests included Corangamite federal member Libby Coker, who commended the volunteers for their community spirit.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was amazing to join with so many fantastic local volunteers for this event \u2013 it highlighted the work of our local community groups, and the environmental advocates who work so hard to protect our coastlines and unique wildlife,&#8221; Ms Coker said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They all play a vital role in many different ways, whether it be helping out in times of crisis, supporting the most vulnerable people in our community, or assisting with community events and this was a great opportunity to recognise them during Volunteer Week.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/06\/BCVW0015_27296.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Organisations represented at the event included Friends of the Bluff, Friends of the Lobster Pot, Ocean Grove Coastcare, Breamlea Coastcare, Barwon EstuaryWatch, and Friends of the Hooded Plover Bellarine.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Bellarine MP Alison Marchant was also at the event.<\/p>\n<p>The evening allowed volunteer group representatives to share insights into their diverse roles, from monitoring river health to protecting vulnerable wildlife such as the hooded plover.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While each [volunteer] group has its own unique objectives, together you are greater than the sum of your parts in caring for this special coastal region,&#8221; Ms Gatehouse said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BARWON Coast has held a special event to celebrate the tireless efforts of local volunteer groups caring for the local environment.
