{"id":87912,"date":"2024-06-02T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-06-01T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=87912"},"modified":"2024-05-30T17:05:45","modified_gmt":"2024-05-30T07:05:45","slug":"southern-right-whales-return-to-victorias-coastline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/southern-right-whales-return-to-victorias-coastline\/","title":{"rendered":"Southern right whales return to Victoria&#8217;s coastline"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>KEEP an eye out for southern right whales as they visit Victorian oceans this winter, with boat operators urged to be aware.<\/p>\n<p>Each year from May to October the whales migrate from their sub-Antarctic feeding grounds to warmer waters to rest and calve.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s approximately 300 of them left in the south-east population with the boating community reminded they aren&#8217;t the only ones in the ocean.<\/p>\n<p>Chief conservation regulator Kate Gavens said the community can help protect them by admiring the animals from afar.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Victorians are lucky to have such iconic marine animals visit our shores every year,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/06\/Southernrightwhale_R_40501.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"399\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Minimum approach rules do apply to the marine animals. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And to make sure the species can survive and thrive for years to come, we need boat operators to stay alert, exercise caution, and give whales plenty of space.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When on the water, the boating community is encouraged to stay alert, slow down and give the whales space. If they find themselves too close to a whale, they should put the vessel in neutral and let the animal pass.<\/p>\n<p>Minimum approach distances apply along the Victorian coastline for all whale species.<\/p>\n<p>Swimmers and surfers must stay at least 50 metres away from all whales, boats at least 200 metres, jet skis 300 metres and aircraft 500 metres.<\/p>\n<p>Further to this, boats must slow to five knots when within 300 metres of whales and stay under 10 knots when within one kilometre.<\/p>\n<p>An exclusion zone for powered watercraft and drones has been set up at Warrnambool&#8217;s Logan Beach from June 1 until October 31.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/06\/LogansBeach_CreditSh_40526.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">There is around 300 of the southern right whales left in the south-east population. Photo: SHANE SMITH<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Humpback whales also pass through the waters and are most active in their southern migrations during June and July.<\/p>\n<p>The Arthur Rylah Institute&#8217;s Whaleface project is running once again to support whale conservation efforts.<\/p>\n<p>Community members are encouraged to participate by reporting sightings and uploading photos to whaleface.swifft.net.au<\/p>\n<p>The animals are protected in Victoria and breaching minimum distances could result in a more than $3,800 penalty.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone getting too close to whales can be reported to Crime Stoppers Victoria on 1800 333 000.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>KEEP an eye out for southern right whales as they visit Victorian oceans this winter, with boat operators urged to be aware.
