	{"id":87945,"date":"2024-06-01T04:00:57","date_gmt":"2024-05-31T18:00:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=87945"},"modified":"2024-05-31T10:08:45","modified_gmt":"2024-05-31T00:08:45","slug":"from-the-garden-straight-to-the-plate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/living\/from-the-garden-straight-to-the-plate\/","title":{"rendered":"From the garden straight to the plate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Overlooking the picturesque Swan Bay sits Basils Farm, where their restaurant ingredients go straight from the garden and onto the plate.<\/p>\n<p>With a seasonal menu influenced by what\u2019s growing, it\u2019s never boring and always fresh with produce harvested daily.<\/p>\n<p>Basils Farm wedding and events Manager Katherine Hampson said growing their own produce was a big part of what they do and enhanced them as a venue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt gives us a point of difference if people are going to drive all the out to come to a restaurant, we\u2019re trying to give them an experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Part of that experience for patrons is being able to walk around the gardens when waiting for their meals, exploring the beauty of the farm.<\/p>\n<p>The potager garden is hedged with espalier fruit trees, which are also utilised in the restaurant and bar, as well as their citrus trees.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_136372\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-136372\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-136372 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/05\/IMG_2372-2-1024x683.jpg?_t=1717113712\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-136372\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Products from the garden are used in the restaurant. Photo: ABBY PARDEW<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor our cocktails we use things like sliced pears, and we dehydrate them, and then they\u2019re used in our pear cocktail, most of our cocktails have got something off the trees in them,\u201d Hampson said.<\/p>\n<p>Along with providing food to the kitchen, the garden is also an opportunity for kids to learn more about produce and where their fruits and vegetables come from.<\/p>\n<p>The farm also has vineyards located behind the restaurant, the grapes are harvested by a local winery before they are turned into wine and sold back through the restaurant.<\/p>\n<p>The venue started out as a cafe, quickly becoming popular before it transitioned into a bustling restaurant and wedding venue.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_136371\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-136371\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-136371 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/05\/IMG_2400-1024x683.jpg?_t=1717113378\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-136371\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bails Farm originally started as a cafe before transforming into a restaurant. Photo: ABBY PARDEW<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hampson believes the biggest attraction to the restaurant and venue is a combination of being on a farm with water views to accompany it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just one of those places I find, where you could sit down and feel like you could spend the whole afternoon here,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur landscape that we\u2019re on with the views across to Queenscliff, across the water, is pretty unique.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd our gardens are just really beautiful with all the bird life and everything that\u2019s here, it\u2019s definitely a wow factor when you arrive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The location and scenery of Basils Farm is what makes it a popular wedding venue in the area, providing a perfect ceremony backdrop for couples.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a lot of local photographers that love coming out here just because there are so many beautiful places to shoot,\u2019 Hampson said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith weddings we do like to really adapt and to let them make it their creative space for their day.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_136374\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-136374\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-136374 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/05\/Basils-Kitchen-771x1024.jpg?_t=1717113628\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"797\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-136374\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The team at Basils Farm are heavily focused on producing really strong food. Photo: MONICA BERRY<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The farm has a heavy focus on keeping their food really strong as they move more into the wedding and events space, with plans to expand the sustainability side of their business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re making plans to actually extend our garden so we can actually provide more food and produce to the kitchen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An Indigenous garden is also being set up at the farm with Warrigal Greens, Pepperberry, Lemon Myrtle and more.<\/p>\n<p>As guests step onto the property they are met with a relaxing and calm atmosphere, a fire pit brings the warmth outside during the cooler months with umbrellas providing shade for the sunny days.<\/p>\n<p>The venue also has a pavilion overlooking the water allowing guests to take in the views whilst being protected from the elements.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a very beautiful, peaceful and tranquil place to be,\u201d Hampson said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have full time gardeners that work here so the grounds are amazing and it\u2019s still a bit of a tucked away piece of paradise that people are still discovering.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_136377\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-136377\" style=\"width: 599px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-136377 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/06\/Basils-Kitchen-2-683x1024.jpg?_t=1717113820\" alt=\"\" width=\"599\" height=\"899\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-136377\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">What&#8217;s growing in the garden is taken into consideration when planning the seasonal menu.
