CITY of Greater Geelong councillor Jim Mason has announced he will not contest his seat at the upcoming council elections in October.<\/p>\n
The announcement, shared via social media last weekend, signals the election will be the end of Cr Mason’s time in the Bellarine Ward, where he has served since 2017.<\/p>\n
“Seven years ago I was fully fledged in campaign mode, now, after having the privilege and honour of being twice elected, I have decided not to contest a third election and to retire from public life,” Cr Mason wrote.<\/p>\n
“I believe the City of Greater Geelong has made excellent progress during this time.<\/p>\n
“Despite various extreme difficulties, focus on our Clever and Creative Vision and a Progressive Community Plan remained sharp.<\/p>\n
“Though we have very much more to do, I am especially proud of the City of Greater Geelong’s policies and programmes which we continue to develop on climate change, the natural environment, sustainability, numerous social issues and especially the support to The Ulu\u1e5fu Statement from the Heart.”<\/p>\n
Cr Mason was elected to the council at the 2017 election, alongside now-mayor Trent Sullivan and former mayor Stephanie Asher, securing 11.06 per cent of the vote and was second elected to the ward.<\/p>\n
“I will continue to work steadfastly for the whole municipality during the final few months of my elected term,” he said.<\/p>\n
“Thank you to all who have supported and assisted me during this enriching period of my life.”<\/p>\n
Cr Mason was also awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2008 for service to international relations through humanitarian assistance to people in developing countries.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
