{"id":89291,"date":"2024-06-28T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-06-27T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=89291"},"modified":"2024-06-27T10:11:57","modified_gmt":"2024-06-27T00:11:57","slug":"country-game-pays-homage-to-junior-footy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/country-game-pays-homage-to-junior-footy\/","title":{"rendered":"Country Game pays homage to junior footy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>GEELONG Football Club players will wear their junior club logos on their guernseys as part of this week&#8217;s annual AFL Country Game.<\/p>\n<p>Local clubs such as Anglesea, St Mary&#8217;s, St Joseph&#8217;s and Queenscliff will feature on the jumpers of players on Chris Scott&#8217;s playing 22 at the MCG tomorrow (Saturday, June 29).<\/p>\n<p>Geelong&#8217;s 2024 Regional Guernsey includes the colours of every Cats AFL player&#8217;s junior or local club \u2013 whether Australian Rules or Gaelic Football \u2013 on the guernseys&#8217; middle hoop, with each player&#8217;s guernsey also featuring their junior logo on their breast.<\/p>\n<p>St Mary&#8217;s and Sunbury are the two most-represented clubs, with each having three players on the Cats&#8217; 2024 list.<\/p>\n<p>Jack Henry, Ollie Henry and Toby Conway all began their footballing journeys with St Mary&#8217;s, while Cameron Guthrie, Zach Guthrie and Mark Blicavs were all juniors at Sunbury.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_138423\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-138423\" style=\"width: 303px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-138423\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/06\/449075426_907337921_60558-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"303\" height=\"379\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-138423\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">L-R: Grovedale junior Mitch Knevitt, Queenscliff junior Jhye Clark and Prahran junior Max Holmes.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Patrick Dangerfield, a junior with Anglesea, said the Country Game was the biggest day on the calendar.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a great recognition of quite clearly how Australia&#8217;s been founded on the core values of farmers and providing for those living in the cities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a wonderful game to recognise how many Australians live, which is rurally, we understand that being in Geelong, which is not totally rural but semi-rural.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s always a game that invokes plenty of passion and you learn more about how some Australians live.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The guernseys feature clubs from the other states as well, including South Australia, Western Australia, Queensland, New South Wales, Tasmania and the Northern Territory.<\/p>\n<p>Ireland-based Gaelic Football teams are also among the list of clubs representated on the guernseys, with Dingle (Mark O&#8217;Connor), Mayo (Oisin Mullin) and Portlaoise (Zach Tuohy) included.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GEELONG Football Club players will wear their junior club logos on their guernseys as part of this week&#8217;s annual AFL Country Game.
