THE Portarlington Table Tennis Club has enjoyed a triumphant return, just a week after losing most of its equipment to thieves.<\/p>\n
The club is now making use of tables, bats and balls that have been donated by the local community and will offer free table tennis sessions until the temporary equipment is replaced, and a security system is installed.<\/p>\n
The club meets twice weekly on Mondays and Thursdays at 90-110 Smythe Street, Portarlington, and players of all experience levels and ages are welcome to join.<\/p>\n
Founder Fabian Barrios said the club was about bringing the community together.<\/p>\n
“It’s a place to come and have fun.<\/p>\n
“I don’t think anybody’s keeping score. That’s the kind of place it is.<\/p>\n
“We’ve got people from all walks of life; we’ve got nurses, doctors, plumbers, electricians.<\/p>\n
He extended his gratitude to the local community and said he was “blown away” by its “amazing” support.<\/p>\n
“We’ve had a lot of people help us get re-established,” Mr Barrios said.<\/p>\n
“No one wants to see [the club] go.”<\/p>\n
He noted the contributions of Community Bank Portarlington, the Portarlington Post Office, Portarlington Golf Club, Hunters Real Estate and the local Lions Club, as well as Rebel Sport which has promised the club five new table tennis tables at a reduced cost, Jaycar Electronics which donated a significantly discounted security system and Mann Glass Co. which replaced the club’s shattered windows at no charge.<\/p>\n
“It’s really made me want to come back stronger,” Mr Barrios said.<\/p>\n
