BELLARINE residents are working out to improve mental health across the region as part of this year’s The Push-Up Challenge, and one local organisation is hopeful for last-minute donations.<\/p>\n

On the Bellarine, basketball club Peninsula Blitz has put its hand up to raise funds for headspace in Ocean Grove, supporting the mental health hub by completing 3,249 push-ups throughout June and raising funds.<\/p>\n

Peninsula Blitz president Derek Haayema said he and the club felt compelled to take part in the challenge due to the seriousness of raising awareness for mental health.<\/p>\n

“Many of the leaders in our club are men who have firsthand experience with mental health struggles, and we recognise that this is an issue that affects both men and women.<\/p>\n

“However, statistics show a higher rate of suicide among men, and we are committed to understanding why this is the case, raising awareness, and encouraging men to connect with available services.”<\/p>\n

The club is on its way to achieving its fundraising goal of $1,000, with all proceeds raised going towards the establishment of a new outdoor therapy space and edible garden at headspace Ocean Grove.<\/p>\n

headspace Ocean Grove manager Tanya Fitzpatrick said the new space would provide a better connection between young people and the environment.<\/p>\n

“This space will give us an opportunity to help young people build a connection with the environment and learn basic cooking techniques which are such a valuable life skill,” said headspace Ocean Grove Manager Tanya Fitzpatrick.<\/p>\n

“We’re thrilled to have the support of the entire Bellarine Peninsula Blitz Basketball Club because we know the strong connection between physical activity and improved mental health.”<\/p>\n

The Push-Up Challenge nationwide concluded on Friday, but donations can still be made.<\/p>\n

Donations to headspace Ocean Grove can be made through thepushupchallenge.com.au<\/a> until mid-July.<\/p>\n
