{"id":89436,"date":"2024-06-27T08:55:52","date_gmt":"2024-06-26T22:55:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=89436"},"modified":"2024-06-27T08:55:52","modified_gmt":"2024-06-26T22:55:52","slug":"400-up-for-paula-birch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/sport\/400-up-for-paula-birch\/","title":{"rendered":"400 up for Paula Birch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>OCEAN GROVE Football Netball Club put the spotlight on a club legend last weekend to celebrate her 400th game of senior netball.<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of players, officials and fans came to watch Paula Birch play a starring role in her side&#8217;s 7-point D Grade victory over Torquay.<\/p>\n<p>Birch was given a warm reception by the home crowd, who formed a guard of honour for her to run out through and held a special banner.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_89442\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-89442\" style=\"width: 452px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-89442 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/06\/kjklj.jpg?_t=1719442475\" alt=\"\" width=\"452\" height=\"603\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/06\/kjklj.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/06\/kjklj-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 452px) 100vw, 452px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-89442\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Paula Birch notched up her 400th senior game last weekend.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Birch name has been synonymous with Ocean Grove netball for more than 30 years, with Paula first donning the red and white as a player in U\/11&#8217;s in the early 1990&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>Off the court, Birch has helped to develop the next generation of netball stars by coaching the club&#8217;s A, B and D Grade sides, along with the Under 19&#8217;s, 17&#8217;s, 15&#8217;s and 13&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>Under her guidance, the Under 15&#8217;s Division 1 side was premiers in 2023.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_89443\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-89443\" style=\"width: 450px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-89443 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/06\/image0000.jpg?_t=1719442483\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/06\/image0000.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/06\/image0000-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-89443\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Birch has been part of the Grubbers since the early 1990&#8217;s.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Ocean Grove FNC netball co-ordinator Gill Hodgson said watching Birch have a best on ground performance in her milestone was fairytale-like.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We were so rapt to be able to celebrate her on Saturday for her amazing contributions to the club.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;From climbing the big trees at Draper Street to come and watching her mum coach and play, to playing 400 games, what a phenomenal effort.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Not only is it what she&#8217;s done on the court, but how amazing she is off the court, and how she&#8217;s become such a great role model for all of us.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are so proud of her and hope to have her around for many more years to come.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ocean Grove&#8217;s D Grade side has now cemented second place on the ladder, and a shot at the premiership is very well in reach.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>OCEAN GROVE Football Netball Club put the spotlight on a club legend last weekend to celebrate her 400th game of senior netball.
