{"id":91314,"date":"2024-08-05T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-08-04T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=91314"},"modified":"2024-08-01T12:23:09","modified_gmt":"2024-08-01T02:23:09","slug":"veteran-support-gets-huge-grant-boost","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/veteran-support-gets-huge-grant-boost\/","title":{"rendered":"Veteran support gets huge grant boost"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TWO local RSL branches will share in more than $14,500 in grant funding to help cater for the needs of local veterans.<\/p>\n<p>More than $13,000 has been allocated to the Torquay RSL sub-branch and $1,500 will go to the Portarlington and St Leonards RSL.<\/p>\n<p>The Building Excellence in Support and Training (BEST) grants program aims to assist with the provision of veteran advocacy services.<\/p>\n<p>Corangamite federal MP Libby Coker said grants would provide ex-servicepeople with extra assistance and support.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This grant will further enable local RSL sub-branches to provide critical advice and support for our veterans, ensuring they receive the care and guidance they deserve.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My electorate of Corangamite has one of the highest numbers of veterans in the state. We must do all we can to support them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_141528\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-141528\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-141528 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/08\/IMG_0323_69041-1-e1722409860308.jpg?_t=1722409864\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-141528\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The BEST program aims to assist with the provision of veteran advocacy services.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The BEST grant program follows the federal government&#8217;s introduction of legislation to simplify Australian veteran rehabilitation and compensation.<\/p>\n<p>Under the Veterans&#8217; Entitlements, Treatment and Support (Simplification and Harmonisation) Bill, all new compensation claims from July 1, 2026 will be dealt with under a single piece of legislation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is another important step in responding to the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide&#8217;s Interim Report and is the result of significant community consultation,&#8221; Ms Coker said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I provided copies of the draft legislation to all local RSL sub-branches to ensure local voices were heard throughout the development of this policy.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>TWO local RSL branches will share in more than $14,500 in grant funding to help cater for the needs of local veterans.
