THE Bellarine’s leading aged care support service is holding a free community day today (Thursday, August 8) to help break down the stigma and awkwardness associated with talking about death, dying and grieving.<\/p>\n

Compassionate Hearts on the Bellarine (CHoB) are inviting community members to Leopold Community Hub, as part of nationwide proceedings for Dying to Know Day.<\/p>\n

Before the free event, CHoB chair Pauline Nunan highlighted the importance of the organisation’s work on the Bellarine.<\/p>\n

She also said the event will include several speakers touching on topics such as palliative care and social support at home, legal aspects related to dying, spirituality as death approaches, care of bodies, funerals and memorials, carers’ support and volunteering with CHoB.<\/p>\n

“CHoB has been operating for five years across the Bellarine.<\/p>\n

“Trained volunteers work with individuals and their families who are experiencing a life-limiting illness, offering non-medical, ‘good neighbour’ support.<\/p>\n

“CHoB also aims to educate our community regarding such life-limiting illnesses, dying and the challenges of grief and loss, as well as advocating for a deeper understanding of the importance of living well and preparing for death.”<\/p>\n

Visitors will be treated to afternoon tea and will take part in informal discussions with fellow guests.<\/p>\n

The Dying to Know Day public health campaign runs throughout the year to help all Australians to feel supported and inspired when planning for their final arrangements and end of life planning.<\/p>\n
