A LOCAL primary school took over the streets of Queenscliff last week as they paraded around dressed as their favourite book characters.<\/p>\n

St Aloysius Primary School joined the many schools around Australia in the annual celebration of Book Week, hosted by the Children’s Book Council of Australia.<\/p>\n

The week runs from August 17 until August 23 and celebrates everything about books and literature, with the 2024 theme “reading is magical.”<\/p>\n

On Friday last week, staff and students from the school paraded in their costumes down Hesse Street in Queenscliff.<\/p>\n

The community lined the streets as they watched the parade before families, staff and students returned to the school for a show by Dazzling Dan the Magic Man.<\/p>\n

Costumes from Harry Potter were a popular choice for the parade.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

 <\/p>\n

St Aloysius Primary School teacher librarian Angela Ritchie said they had a great turnout for their parade and Book Week is always magic.<\/p>\n

“Book week for us is an opportunity for us to go out into the community and for the students and their families to share our passion for books and the celebration of what we do in our school, which is celebrate the community.<\/p>\n

“These are the memories kids will have of their primary school, they will remember the costume, the parade, the waving to the crowds of people.”<\/p>\n

For St Aloysius Primary School student Ivy, this was her first parade with the school.<\/p>\n

“I thought it was fun because we had a whole school photo in the middle of Hesse Street,” she said.<\/p>\n

As part of the parade families and community members lined up along Hesse Street to watch.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

 <\/p>\n

The school also participated in a range of craft activities throughout the week, including a three-dimensional wall of book art, made with re-purposed old books.<\/p>\n

Ms Ritchie already has big plans for Book Week next year which will run from August 16 to August 23 with the theme of “book an adventure.”<\/p>\n
