A NEW research report has validated the transformative impacts of local children’s charity Cottage by the Sea.<\/p>\n

Its latest report with Deakin University, “The Impact of Cottage by the Sea: From Ripples to Waves” explored the medium- to long-term impacts of Cottage by the Sea.<\/p>\n

This was completed qualitatively through interviews with existing and former participants, going back as far as 1939.<\/p>\n

The findings were summarised in four key broad themes – Cottage’s ability to foster fun and enjoyment, build relationships, provide a safe haven and create happy memories.<\/p>\n

The research has validated the positive impact of the children’s charity.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Positive outcomes were reported for the children and young people themselves, their peers, their teachers and parents, and communities more generally.<\/p>\n

The participants believed Cottage gave them the chance to enjoy themselves, not only by providing fun and challenging activities.<\/p>\n

Key to this was the mementos given to the children and young people made by members of the community, such as clothing and handmade toys.<\/p>\n

The latest report showcased the transformative powers of Cottage by the Sea’s programs.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

 <\/p>\n

These artefacts become ongoing symbols of their time in the program, with parents and children and young people alike often mentioning how treasured these items are.<\/p>\n

Cottage by the Sea chief executive officer Adam Wake said the research brought to life the enduring impacts of the charity.<\/p>\n

“We have known anecdotally for some time [the impact] but it can be so difficult to quantify and articulate.<\/p>\n

“The report shows how even the smallest of ripples can empower these children and young people to ride life’s larger, more challenging, waves.”<\/p>\n

A former Cottage participant who was interviewed in this research has gone on to participate in the Olympics and the Commonwealth Games.<\/p>\n

She said that her experiences at Cottage had helped shape her life in a more positive way.<\/p>\n

Lead researcher professor Louise Paatsch said the study was the “most humbling and rewarding piece of research work I have been involved with.”<\/p>\n

Cottage will use the four key findings to develop and enhance its programs further so the charity can continue to achieve its mission of offering inspiration, fun and opportunity to more children.<\/p>\n
