{"id":93220,"date":"2024-09-04T21:46:45","date_gmt":"2024-09-04T11:46:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/torquay-midfielder-joins-elite-company-with-les-ash-win\/"},"modified":"2024-09-04T22:27:32","modified_gmt":"2024-09-04T12:27:32","slug":"torquay-midfielder-joins-elite-company-with-les-ash-win","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/sport\/torquay-midfielder-joins-elite-company-with-les-ash-win\/","title":{"rendered":"Torquay midfielder joins elite company with Les Ash win"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">AFTER rejoining his junior club at the start of 2024, Torquay\u2019s Matthew Boag has walked out of tonight\u2019s (Wednesday, September 4) Bellarine Football Netball League Awards Night as a Les Ash Medallist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Boag became just the sixth Torquay Tiger to claim the BFL\u2019s league best-and-fairest award, finishing with 26 votes, six votes clear of Anglesea playing-coach and coming Grand Final opponent Jordan Keras.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Boag joins Torquay players Mark Browne (1986), Chris Haddock (1990, 1991), George Arnold (1998), Dom Gleeson (2018) and teammate and captain James Darke (2014, 2017, 2021 and 2022) to win the league\u2019s highest individual honour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">With durability a factor in Boag\u2019s overall tally, the former Newtown &amp; Chilwell Eagle played all 18 home and away season games in 2024, after announcing his intention to move back to Spring Creek Reserve following spending 2023 in the Geelong Football League.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_144934\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-144934\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-144934 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/09\/B07K5532-Torquay-Vs-Anglesea-Footlbal-scaled.jpg?_t=1725440361\" alt=\"\" width=\"310\" height=\"465\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-144934\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Anglesea playing-coach Jordan Keras polled 20 votes to finish the count in second.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Boag wasted no time tallying votes on the night with a best-on-ground performance in his season debut against Drysdale.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">He received three votes in Round 3, Round 10, Round 12, Round 14 and Round 15 to make up the bulk of his total.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Boag also polled in Round 4 (2 votes), Round 7 (1 vote), Round 9 (1 vote), before notching up four more votes in the final two rounds of the home and away season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Among the other award winners, Queenscliff\u2019s Jayden Durran received the Don Cole Medal in the Reserves, finishing ahead of Drysdale\u2019s Joshua Hopgood.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_144935\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-144935\" style=\"width: 603px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-144935 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/09\/My-Room-48-scaled.jpg?_t=1725440441\" alt=\"\" width=\"603\" height=\"402\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-144935\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Drysdale&#8217;s Luke Preece was a surprise riser in the count with 16 votes. He tied for third alongside Geelong Amateur&#8217;s Harry Kershaw and Riley Ferguson.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Newcomb\u2019s Jack Duke and Riley Mattner took out the leading goal-kicker awards in their respective competitions with 71 and 65 goals respectively.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Torquay was also recognised for their success across their senior football program, crowned Football Club Champions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Geelong Amateur\u2019s Tom Gorrell was named Rookie of the Year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">The 2024 BFL Team of the Year:<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-93237 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/09\/AFL-Comp-11.png?_t=1725452824\" alt=\"\" width=\"490\" height=\"612\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/09\/AFL-Comp-11.png 1600w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/09\/AFL-Comp-11-240x300.png 240w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/09\/AFL-Comp-11-819x1024.png 819w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/09\/AFL-Comp-11-768x960.png 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/09\/AFL-Comp-11-1229x1536.png 1229w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 490px) 100vw, 490px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Torquay continued its strong representation in the Team of the Year with three players (Ben McNamara, Baxter Mensch and Matthew Boag) and Coach of the Year Dom Gleeson all earning selections to the 2024 side.
