	{"id":94031,"date":"2024-09-29T04:00:38","date_gmt":"2024-09-28T18:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=94031"},"modified":"2024-09-25T15:50:53","modified_gmt":"2024-09-25T05:50:53","slug":"third-times-the-charm-at-arlo-wines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/living\/third-times-the-charm-at-arlo-wines\/","title":{"rendered":"Third time&#8217;s the charm at Arlo Wines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Peter Roddy and Ebony Vagg took a chance on a Portarlington business, transforming it into their latest venture, Arlo Wines.<\/p>\n<p>The dynamic duo is also the team behind Portarlington&#8217;s Pier Street Caf\u00e9 and Melbourne&#8217;s Noir Restaurant.<\/p>\n<p>The Arlo Wines story began in 2023, initially as a pop-up bar concept, before transitioning into pasta and wine.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It came up just before Christmas last year, just before the holiday season, and we jumped at it and we have been building it since,&#8221; Roddy said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I hired a restaurant manager and he&#8217;s been very successful in building a community around us.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Moving the concept along a little bit to a pasta bar, I&#8217;ve brought a new pasta machine to make fresh pasta from Italy and then we are doing our thing: pasta, wines and cocktails.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_146580\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-146580\" style=\"width: 597px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-146580\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/09\/Pasta2_32832.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"597\" height=\"747\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-146580\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Arlo Wines has purchased a new pasta machine to make freshly made pasta with housemade sauce. Photo: ARLO WINES\/FACEBOOK<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After closing in August for renovations, the venue reopened last week with a refreshed bar, new seating and cocktail offerings.<\/p>\n<p>The concept for the pasta bar came after the couple did something similar in Melbourne, which came with great success and &#8220;was a lot of fun&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a Melbourne style offering in the country; it&#8217;s a quality produce and a delicious glass of wine.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The food is the big selling point. Photo: ABBY PARDEW<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The duck pasta dish is going to be a real point of difference,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The prawn spaghetti is definitely popular at Pier St. It&#8217;s been on the menu there for a long time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to drink offerings, the couple have branched out, adding wines from across the world to their list.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Every business in town does local wines, so we wanted to do something that&#8217;s different,&#8221; Roddy said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve got a lot of French, Italian wines and then the best Australian wines as well.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_146576\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-146576\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-146576\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/09\/IMG_3791_32797.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-146576\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wine from across the world is poured at the Portarlington venue, including the best Australian offerings. Photo: ABBY PARDEW<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The cocktail list features some of the classics including, margaritas, Aperol Spritz, Americanos and more, with some highlighting local Bellaine gin.<\/p>\n<p>Roddy has been a chef his whole life, working in the UK for the likes of Gordon Ramsay before he moved over to Australia.<\/p>\n<p>In 2011 he opened award-winning Melbourne restaurant Noir.<\/p>\n<p>The Swan Street venue has gone from strength to strength. Featuring fine French cuisine, the restaurant was awarded One Hat status for their culinary experience.<\/p>\n<p>Five years ago, Portalington&#8217;s Pier St got its start, serving up fresh seafood by the water and showcasing local suppliers and produce.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_146575\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-146575\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-146575\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/09\/IMG_3789_32762.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-146575\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Since renovating the space, Alro Wines has expanding its cocktail offering. Photo: ABBY PARDEW.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Roddy now splits his time between all three venues and enjoys the workload that comes with it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Cooking just puts me in my happy place. It&#8217;s quite therapeutic and the challenge of endless work, I&#8217;ve got the energy for that,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>He believes after taking over the Pier St Caf\u00e9, Arlo Wines was going to be their end destination, with no plans to expand further at this stage.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We had been looking for an opportunity in Melbourne for a second business, the one in Richmond is a very small restaurant.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We happened to be spending some time for my daughter&#8217;s birthday here in Portarlington and a hell of an opportunity just jumped at us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_146579\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-146579\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-146579\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/09\/IMG_3796_32792.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-146579\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wines line the shelves in the bar and through the dining room.
