	{"id":95914,"date":"2024-11-08T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-11-07T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=95914"},"modified":"2024-11-08T14:45:46","modified_gmt":"2024-11-08T03:45:46","slug":"a-textured-tribute-to-anglesea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/real-estate\/a-textured-tribute-to-anglesea\/","title":{"rendered":"A textured tribute to Anglesea"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ARCHITECT John Wardle&#8217;s latest project draws its inspiration from Anglesea&#8217;s ochre cliffs and rugged coastline.<\/p>\n<p>Externally, the colour and tonality of this landscape is expressed in extruded and hand torn terracotta bricks that have been fired only once, with a glaze applied on the raw material that incorporates the colours of the native flora planted around the home.<\/p>\n<p>Developed with brickmaker Klynton Krause, the resulting rough-hewn texture and burnt earth tones of this invented brickwork sit in harmony with the clifftop landscape on which the property resides.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/11\/Burnt_Earth_Beach_Ho_49405.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The home draws its internal atmosphere from its use of burnt earth \u2013 terracotta and brick \u2013 balanced by timber ceilings, joinery and purposeful steel detailing.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Klynton has been working our architectural practice for many years and is quite accommodating of our ideas to adapt colour, texture and form,&#8221; Wardle said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This was another level of trust and experimentation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The results are craggy and deeply individual bricks. No two are the same.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Inside, terracotta tiles sourced from Italy and spotted gum timber give the home what Wardle describes as a &#8220;simple, textured palette&#8221;, further imbuing the space with a deep connection to place.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/11\/Burnt_Earth_Beach_Ho_49362.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Crafted through an experimental hand torn and glazing process, the home&#8217;s external brickwork has been designed to reflect the rugged coastal landscape of Wardle&#8217;s childhood.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Designed as a retreat for Wardle&#8217;s family and the generations to come, the home is unlike anything the architect has designed before and replaces a dilapidated beach shack that partially burned down in the Ash Wednesday bushfires.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve had the house for a number of years, so we understood its strengths and weaknesses; what we wanted for the future,&#8221; Wardle said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was about orientating the house to maximise light into the house and views out. We wanted spaces to socialise and spaces for quiet moments.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>An established eucalypt on the north side of the property provided the focal point for the arrangement of the home&#8217;s primary living spaces, while the kitchen&#8217;s island bench acts as both the literal and figurative heart of the home.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/11\/Burnt_Earth_Beach_Ho_49443.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The kitchen&#8217;s island bench acts as both the literal and figurative heart of the home, with all social activity spilling outwardly into living and dining areas.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It is from here that all social activity spills out into living and dining areas on the ground floor.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For our family, the kitchen is the place to gather \u2013 cooking, eating, making plan, socialising \u2013 as it is for many of us,&#8221; Wardle said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It made sense for this to be the centre of the plan and for this space to overlook the outdoor spaces and landscape.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In warmer weather, we venture out, or back into the home when it&#8217;s cooler.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Either way, the kitchen is never far away.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_106860\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-106860\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-106860 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/11\/Burnt_Earth_Beach_House_N42_Trevor-Mein-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-106860\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wardle will open the doors of this Anglesea home to the public later this month as part of Geelong Design Week.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Last night (Thursday, November 7), the project, named Burnt Earth Beach House, was recognised with two accolades at the National Architecture Awards.<\/p>\n<p>The project won the Emil Sodersten Award for Interior Architecture, along with one of the top prizes for residential design.<\/p>\n<p>The jury praised the home for its &#8220;exemplary interior architecture&#8221; and highlighted its &#8220;masterfully composed spatial journey rich in detail and delight&#8221;, as well as the rawness and experimental nature of its exterior.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The house emerges from the earth, sheathed in handcrafted clay bricks.
