{"id":96189,"date":"2024-11-13T16:34:31","date_gmt":"2024-11-13T05:34:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/launching-an-engineering-career\/"},"modified":"2024-11-13T16:37:47","modified_gmt":"2024-11-13T05:37:47","slug":"launching-an-engineering-career","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/launching-an-engineering-career\/","title":{"rendered":"Launching an engineering career"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>INSTEAD of taking a gap year after finishing high school like she originally planned, Bella Dripps\u00a0started her journey in studying engineering.<\/p>\n<p>Wanting to build her knowledge, skills and confidence before heading into a university degree in aeronautical engineering, Ms Dripps enrolled in the Diploma of Engineering at\u00a0The Gordon TAFE.<\/p>\n<p>Her decisions to take the vocational path gave her the practical, industry- relevant engineering skills to prepare for university.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m really enjoying TAFE. The coursework is practical, the class size is small, and the teachers are great,&#8221; Ms Dripps said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re using the engineering workshops on campus and have plenty of networking opportunities with professionals in the field.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re covering a broad range of engineering topics and it&#8217;s building my skills and confidence for when I\u00a0start university.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_149929\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-149929\" style=\"width: 602px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-149929\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/11\/Engineering-Bella-5_36510.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"602\" height=\"402\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-149929\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Female students are supported in industries traditionally underrepresented by women.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Her experience highlights the value of vocational education as an alternative pathway or change of preference options, for those who may not achieve the scores to enter university.<\/p>\n<p>Various career pathways are available for those not offered a place at their first-choice university or undecided about their next steps.<\/p>\n<p>By attending TAFE, students are able to earn credits that can decrease the time and reduce the cost of any\u00a0further studies.<\/p>\n<p>Female students are strongly supported by The Gordon to pursue careers in engineering and industries traditionally underrepresented by women.<\/p>\n<p>Access to clear and appealing education and training options to work in an industry offering well-paid and secure career pathways supports the &#8220;Making it equal: Victoria&#8217;s Women in Manufacturing Strategy&#8221; released by the Victorian government.<\/p>\n<p>The Gordon&#8217;s engineering teacher Ollie Buckley is proudly &#8220;developing the next generation of engineers&#8221; in\u00a0his role.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Buckley loves helping his students develop their skills, pushing them to achieve high standards and enjoying connecting with them, passing on his industry knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>He described The Gordon&#8217;s training as &#8220;a great launching pad for commencing studies that lead into higher learning or into industry&#8221;.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 602px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/11\/Engineering-Bella-1_36524.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"602\" height=\"402\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Gordon offered a practical, industry-relevant education.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;Our students will be the ones who drive change in the industry for years to come,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>A former Gordon engineering student himself, Mr Buckley, has undertaken numerous roles in the industry since his studies, including working at the Geelong Arts Centre, one of his career highlights.<\/p>\n<p>Qualified engineers are in high demand across various fields, with an increasing number of women pursuing careers in the industry.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a great time to commence in the industry as there is a high demand for people in many different areas,&#8221; Mr Buckley said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There are several developing areas that need qualified people to assist and progress these important projects.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For more information or to start a career in engineering, head to <a href=\"http:\/\/thegordon.edu.au\">thegordon.edu.au<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>INSTEAD of taking a gap year after finishing high school like she originally planned, Bella Dripps\u00a0started her journey in studying engineering.
