{"id":96475,"date":"2024-11-25T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-11-24T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=96475"},"modified":"2024-11-20T23:14:19","modified_gmt":"2024-11-20T12:14:19","slug":"inaugural-wombats-walk-fights-off-windy-conditions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/inaugural-wombats-walk-fights-off-windy-conditions\/","title":{"rendered":"Inaugural Wombat&#8217;s Walk fights off windy conditions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WINDY and wild conditions didn&#8217;t hinder fundraising efforts at the inaugural Wombat Walk last Sunday (November 17).<\/p>\n<p>The event was organised by Bellarine charity Wombat&#8217;s Wish, in honour of International Child Grief Awareness Month in November.<\/p>\n<p>Taking place at the Portarlington Cricket Club around 350 people gathered, walking laps around the oval, creating awareness for Wombat&#8217;s Wish and raising funds for the organisation.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s estimated the event has raised more than $20,000 for the organisation, allowing them to continue their grief support work within the community.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/11\/IMG_0878_11042.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"593\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Those who headed along to the walk were also treated to market stalls.&#8217;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Wombat&#8217;s Wish community and engagement officer Suzy Coad said everybody at the event spent up big and the money will go towards running more grief programs.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We can provide more support in our counselling area and we can help out on family days.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve got a Christmas family day coming up on December 8\u2026we buy presents and that kind of thing. It will all help, every service that we provide, so that&#8217;s fantastic.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Despite strong winds forcing the event to move inside for the silent auctions, raffles and mystery bags, people remained dedicated to the event and continued to donate.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/11\/IMG_0955_27823.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"1081\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Wombat&#8217;s Wish Mascot, Freeman, was ready to greet event goers.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ms Coad said one of the highlights throughout the day was how people came together and kept their spirits high, making the best of the conditions.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was really nice just to see the Wombat&#8217;s team and all the volunteers and supporters band together and help all the market stalls out and everything like that,&#8221; Ms Coad said.<\/p>\n<p>Along with the walk, event goers were also treated to live music, a mobile zoo, jumping castles and more.<\/p>\n<p>Event organisers are planning for the walk to return next year, with the goal of raising even more money.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Coad thanked all those who donated to the cause and those who supported the event.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WINDY and wild conditions didn&#8217;t hinder fundraising efforts at the inaugural Wombat Walk last Sunday (November 17).
