{"id":96667,"date":"2024-11-29T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-11-28T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=96667"},"modified":"2024-11-28T10:14:48","modified_gmt":"2024-11-27T23:14:48","slug":"local-garden-provides-place-of-purpose","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/local-garden-provides-place-of-purpose\/","title":{"rendered":"Local garden provides place of purpose"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Garden president Vin McKay, speaking with the Bellarine Times on National Community Gardens Day, said the club is currently operating with approximately 40 paying members, numbers reminiscent of pre-pandemic levels.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re quite active in the community and we&#8217;ve got quite a long history here in Ocean Grove,&#8221; Mr McKay said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve had some good help from council and the state government with the local infrastructure here, but we&#8217;re a garden that caters to anyone, whether it be kids, families or adults of any age.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/11\/IMG_1493_35560.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"531\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kate Thomas and vice president Jeff Harwood seated on a chair built in honour of garden founding member Viv Kershaw.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a good mix of people, and while we remained open during the pandemic, there were some tough times on the social side of things, but that&#8217;s all in the rear view mirror now and we&#8217;re excited to see new faces joining us each month.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In addition to providing an abundance of the Bellarine Community Farmers Market&#8217;s produce and coordinating environmental events, the garden hosts monthly working bees where new members are encouraged to attend.<\/p>\n<p>Garden vice-president Jeff Harwood joined the garden when he wanted to expand his growing skills into a larger space than his apartment, stating it has offered various benefits to his lifestyle.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/11\/IMG_1499_35584.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"491\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Zoe Stewart-Johns at work.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Personally, I&#8217;ve been into gardening for a very long time and the community garden allowed me to grow in a larger space than my apartment,&#8221; Mr Harwood said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The working bees are as much as you want it to be.
