{"id":97041,"date":"2024-12-09T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-12-08T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=97041"},"modified":"2024-12-05T13:12:51","modified_gmt":"2024-12-05T02:12:51","slug":"city-launches-disability-access-and-inclusion-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/city-launches-disability-access-and-inclusion-plan\/","title":{"rendered":"City launches Disability Access and Inclusion Plan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE City of Greater Geelong has recognised International Day of People with Disability by launching its Disability Access and Inclusion Plan 2024-28.<\/p>\n<p>The launch coincided with the hosting of the ninth annual Geelong Awards for People with Disability at the Geelong Library and Heritage Centre on Tuesday this week.<\/p>\n<p>The night recognised 12 community members for their outstanding work in advocacy, leadership, and empowering others, and in their contributions to the community through their work or volunteering.<\/p>\n<p>The winners of the 2024 Geelong Awards for People with Disability, which marked the fifth year the event has been presented by the city, were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Leanne Watson \u2013 Volunteering Award<\/li>\n<li>Matthew Gardiner \u2013 Leadership and Advocacy Award<\/li>\n<li>Laura Williamson \u2013 Achievement Award, and<\/li>\n<li>Justine Martin \u2013 Business Leadership Access and Inclusion Award.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Geelong mayor Stretch Kontelj congratulated the winners on their accomplishments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to commend all of the nominees, who have made a significant contribution to the Greater Geelong community, and pay particular credit to the winners of these awards,\u201d Cr Kontelj said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe City of Greater Geelong is at its best when everybody in the community regardless of race, gender, or ability is given the same opportunities to succeed and these awards highlight the amazing talent we have right across our region.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Disability Access and Inclusion Plan outlines the city\u2019s actions to create a municipality that is more accessible, inclusive, welcoming and supports the full participation of people with disability.<\/p>\n<p>Cr Anthony Aitken said the plan set out steps to reduce and remove barriers experienced by people with a disability.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCouncil is committed to working alongside people with disability, their carers and supporters to improve the lives of those living with a disability in our region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe recognise and embrace the rights of people with disability to experience, benefit and enjoy all aspects of society, and these rights lie at the heart of this plan.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE City of Greater Geelong has recognised International Day of People with Disability by launching its Disability Access and Inclusion Plan 2024-28.
