{"id":97497,"date":"2024-12-20T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-12-19T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=97497"},"modified":"2024-12-17T16:03:53","modified_gmt":"2024-12-17T05:03:53","slug":"st-als-open-new-biodiversity-garden","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/st-als-open-new-biodiversity-garden\/","title":{"rendered":"St Als open new biodiversity garden"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A LOCAL primary school has used a junior landcare grant to enhance the local environment and teach its students about native flora\u00a0and fauna.<\/p>\n<p>St Aloysius Primary School in Queenscliff officially opened its Biodiversity Garden last week to its student body, teachers and dignitaries.<\/p>\n<p>The garden features a new vegetation zone for local indigenous small birds, and a safe place for insects and honeyeaters.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/12\/IMG_7968_24139.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"448\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The student weaving circle of connection consists of hand painted stones of fish from the Great Southern Reef.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The chosen area borders a bush food and frog pond area, which is also next to the Swan Bay\u00a0Ramsar wetlands.<\/p>\n<p>It also features a weaving circle of connection, with stones consisting of student paintings of indigenous fish from the Great Southern Reef.<\/p>\n<p>Students plan on using the garden to collect data for citizen science activities and its Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) units.<\/p>\n<p>STEAM teacher Jo Britt said additional funds from the grant have and will continue to be used to run excursions and incursions to support their learning.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/12\/IMG_7969_24110.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"407\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students Ivy and Winnie enjoying the new biodiversity garden.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Further activities included an excursion to the local native vegetation area with the Bellarine Catchment Network, an incursion to build insect hotels, an incursion with a First Nations artist and weaver and an incursion and excursion with Bellarine Birdlife.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Through a school wide STEAM education unit of action learning, the students will continue to engage with ecological knowledge to develop cross curriculum sustainability values, attitudes and social justice awareness.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The unit of learning will also involve action plans and knowledge enhancement in the curriculum areas.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A LOCAL primary school has used a junior landcare grant to enhance the local environment and teach its students about native flora\u00a0and fauna.
