POLICE are reminding people over the holiday season to keep their homes secure.<\/p>\n

More people spend time outdoors during the warmer months, and windows and doors are often left open, which police say can create opportunities for thieves. “Summer is traditionally a peak time for home burglaries and car thefts, and locking your property significantly reduces the risk,” Senior Sergeant Jess Reynolds said.<\/p>\n

“Before going to bed, make it a routine to ensure all doors and windows in your home and car are securely locked, including internal doors leading to the garage.”<\/p>\n

Other effective deterrents are sensor lights and pets, as both are known to discourage offenders. These simple steps are often enough to deter opportunistic burglars and thieves however.<\/p>\n

“Expect to see police on patrol every day and night in your community to deter opportunistic thieves and reduce crime,” Senior Sergeant Reynolds said.<\/p>\n

If heading away on holidays, let a trusted family member, friend, or neighbour know so they can keep an eye on your house, collect your mail and take your bins in.<\/p>\n

You could also consider registering your absence at your local police station before you go away.<\/p>\n

How the register works<\/p>\n

All police stations have an absence from residence register.<\/p>\n

When you submit your absence from residence, police can use the information provided to contact you if there is an incident at your home.<\/p>\n

They can also keep your address in mind when performing patrols of the area.<\/p>\n

However, there is no guarantee that police will attend your property for a check-in.<\/p>\n

How to register your absence<\/p>\n

You can register your absence online, or can download the form, complete it and take it to your local police station – head to police.vic.gov.au\/absence-residence<\/a><\/p>\n

When you register your absence from residence with Victoria Police, you will need to provide:<\/p>\n

Your contact information<\/p>\n

The times and dates you will be away, and<\/p>\n

Details for who to contact while you are away.<\/p>\n

Be sure to notify police if you return earlier than planned.<\/p>\n
