Cancer Council Victoria’s head of strategy and support Danielle Spence said many experiencing cancer, and their families, have struggled emotionally while navigating the cancer system and dealing with the cost of living pressures.<\/p>\n
“In 2024, our emotional counselling referrals increased by 31 per cent, while our financial counselling referrals increased by 52 per cent.<\/p>\n
“Some Victorians are finding the cost of cancer and living overwhelming.<\/p>\n
“Some people are unable to work due to the side effects of treatment, and they are telling us that, for the first time, they are having to tap into their life savings to make ends meet.”<\/p>\n
The Australian charity’s information and support line is available to anyone affected by the disease, providing emotional and practical support.<\/p>\n
“13 11 20 is free, confidential and available for anyone affected by cancer who has a question \u2013 those diagnosed and their family, friends and carers,” Ms Spence said.<\/p>\n
Support through the line is available Monday to Friday from 9am until 5pm, where cancer nursers can answer a variety of questions and match callers with volunteers who have gone through a similar experience.<\/p>\n
