Locals are invited to soak up the buzz of a major international sporting event when the Surf Coast Classic arrives in Lorne as part of the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race.<\/p>\n

The Surf Coast Classic is a point-to-point race from Lorne to Torquay, featuring world-class cyclists vying for honours in the Women’s Elite race on Wednesday, January 29 and the Men’s Elite race on Thursday, January 30.<\/p>\n

“I encourage locals to get down to Lorne to watch the start of the Surf Coast Classic to cheer on the cyclists and add to the electric atmosphere,” Surf Coast Shire mayor Mike Bodsworth said.<\/p>\n

Both international races start at Mountjoy Parade, against the picturesque backdrop of Lorne foreshore. Local shopfronts, including cafes and restaurants, will offer front row seats to some of the world’s best cyclists.<\/p>\n

The Surf Coast Classic kicks off a week of world-class cycling in the region with mayor Bodsworth excited to watch all the action.<\/p>\n

“The Surf Coast Classic races are important events for the Surf Coast, cementing our status as a cycling destination and showcasing our region to a global audience,” he said.<\/p>\n

“It will be a great way to kick off a huge year of cycling, culminating in a World Championship event.”<\/p>\n

Lorne has become synonymous with hosting world class cycling courses.<\/p>\n

It has hosted the iconic Amy’s Gran Fondo for the past 13 years, and this year will be the official host city for the 2025 UCI Gran Fondo World Championships on October 19.<\/p>\n

Mayor Bodsworth said the town provides the perfect balance for cycling of magnificent ocean views combined with challenging inclines and windy inland hinterland roads.<\/p>\n

“Lorne is a stunning town and events like this help boost our businesses outside of the peak tourist season, increasing the Surf Coast’s reputation as a year-round visitor destination,” he said.<\/p>\n
