LOCAL pet owners are being encouraged to help their dogs adjust to post-holiday routines to prevent behavioural issues such as separation anxiety and boredom.<\/p>\n
Pet Insurance Australia spokesperson Nadia Crighton said the return to work and school can be challenging for pets who have grown accustomed to having their owners around.<\/p>\n
“After spending extended periods with their families over the holidays, dogs can experience separation anxiety or boredom when routines shift,” she said.<\/p>\n
“These changes can lead to undesirable behaviours such as excessive barking, chewing, or other destructive activities.”<\/p>\n
To ease the transition, Crighton recommends gradually reintroducing routines, ensuring dogs have a safe space, and incorporating daily exercise.<\/p>\n
She said adjusting a dog’s schedule before returning to work or school can help.<\/p>\n
“Start adjusting your dog’s daily schedule a few days before work or school begins. This includes feeding, walking, and playtime at the hours you’ll maintain post-holidays.”<\/p>\n
Providing a comfortable and secure environment is also important.<\/p>\n
“Ensure your dog has access to their favourite toys, a cosy bed, and fresh water,” she said.<\/p>\n
“Consider interactive toys or puzzle feeders to keep them mentally engaged.”<\/p>\n
Daily exercise can help alleviate stress and excess energy.<\/p>\n
“A tired dog is a happy dog,” Crighton said.<\/p>\n
“Morning walks or play sessions can help expend energy and reduce stress while you’re away.”<\/p>\n
Crighton also suggests practicing short periods of absence before work routines resume to help dogs adjust.<\/p>\n
“Spend short periods away from your dog in the days leading up to your return to work,” she said.<\/p>\n
