FORMER Geelong Cats VFL captain and staff member Troy Selwood has passed away at the age of 40.<\/p>\n
Selwood spent more than 10 years at Geelong, firstly guiding the VFL team to a premiership in 2012 before taking up various off-field roles at the club including football operations, academy manager and talent ID manager.<\/p>\n
Before his time at the Cats, Selwood played 75 AFL games for the Brisbane Lions between 2003 and 2010.<\/p>\n
He also had a brief stint at the Magpies in a dual list manager and recruiting role, before moving to Geelong Grammar in 2021.<\/p>\n
The Selwood family released a statement earlier today (Tuesday, February 4) about Troy\u2019s passing.<\/p>\n
“We are heartbroken by the loss of our son, brother and father, Troy this morning. We will miss Troy more than words can express,” the Selwood family stated.<\/p>\n
“We will miss Troy\u2019s bravery, his humour, his deep thinking, his love and compassion. Troy had a generosity of spirit, cared deeply about people and strove to make the lives of others better.<\/p>\n
“We are grateful to all those that have supported Troy throughout his life, and we know that his many friends, teammates and colleagues will miss him greatly.”<\/p>\n
Geelong Cats chief executive officer Steve Hocking expressed his deepest condolences.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are extremely saddened to learn of Troy\u2019s passing. The news today has had a deep impact on many current and former players and staff,” he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cTroy had a great spirit and energy and was someone who always cared about others. He had a passion for working with young people and helping them achieve their dreams of playing elite football.<\/p>\n
