WORKS have begun in Ocean Grove this week to replace the ageing beach access stairs at Wedge Street.<\/p>\n

In recent years, the stairs have sustained significant damage from tidal and storm surges, and despite receiving ongoing safety repairs, are now at the end of their lifespan.<\/p>\n

The new structure will boast a new design, informed by a coastal impact assessment, which will see the stairs relocated further into the dune face and outside the tidal zone with the aim of reducing the impacts of erosion and minimising ongoing maintenance costs.<\/p>\n

A larger viewing platform, seating and improved fencing and pathways will also be delivered as part of the project.<\/p>\n

Barwon Coast chief executive officer Gareth Smith thanked the community for their patience and support while the organisation works to deliver “improved and sustainable” beach access at Wedge Street.<\/p>\n

“We know how important safe beach access is to the community,” he said.<\/p>\n

“This upgrade will provide a more sustainable and resilient structure while enhancing the experience for beachgoers.”<\/p>\n

Construction on the project began on Tuesday this week and is expected to wrap up at the end of March, with beach access at the site unavailable until the project is complete.<\/p>\n

The $171,500 will be jointly funded by Barwon Coast and the Victorian government’s coastal public access and risk grants program.<\/p>\n
