QUEENSCLIFF Coast Guard is among the groups that will benefit from the rollout of new digital radios to Marine Search and Rescue (MSAR) units and volunteers across the state to improve their communication on the water.<\/p>\n
The Victorian government has invested more than $1.3 million to deliver 130 portable radios for volunteers and to install radios on 22 vessels and in eight vehicles.<\/p>\n
The radios are connected to the Victorian Radio Network, giving MSAR units real-time communication with the Water Police Rescue Co-ordination Centre, which is a step up in connectivity when responding to rescue operations.<\/p>\n
It will also support the co-ordination centre to monitor and locate vessels and crews when they are in the water.<\/p>\n
There are five fixed-base stations and a console at the Water Police Coordination Centre with two portable consoles available for use.<\/p>\n
The project has been delivered by Emergency Management Victoria, the Department of Justice and Community Safety, Victoria Police, Motorola Solutions and MSAR volunteers and stakeholders.<\/p>\n
The Emergency Management Operational Communications Trust Fund delivered more than $760,000 to support the ongoing maintenance of the radios.<\/p>\n
Queenscliff Coast Guard flotilla commander Michael Donohue said he was thrilled with the better connectivity.<\/p>\n
“The new radio system has greatly enhanced communication between MSAR and Water Police and enables us to communicate directly with other services such as CFA, Lifesaving Victoria and Ambulance. The statewide coverage enables us to communicate and work statewide if and when required.”<\/p>\n
Bellarine MP Alison Marchant visited the Queenscliff Coast Guard on Tuesday last week to announce the new radios.<\/p>\n
“Marine Search and Rescue Units play a critical role in keeping people safe in the water – which is why we’re making sure they have the best resources to do that,”she said.<\/p>\n
“These new digital radios will roll out across Victoria and give volunteers live communication with the Water Police – ensuring everyone has instant information.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
